This could become a very damaging dispute for a key trust. While it has to save money, the rates proposed are so low it is hard to see many docs accepting them: an F1 with a student loan would take home under £10 an hour for doing a shift on top of 48hrs normal working week.

@IanStockport @Azeem_Majeed • not all scanners are created equal • not all buildings are the same (and will need to be up to standard eg. floor reenforcement, Faraday cages etc. The scanner cost is not the only thing to be taken into consideration.

@elli_copter @Azeem_Majeed The cost per MRI scanners drops if a government puts in an order for "n" identical scanner per year in identical building, fully committed for five years.

The National Screening Committee has already reviewed the case for prostate cancer screening in the UK and concluded that the PSA test has too many limitations to be used as in a screening programme. The case of Sir Chris Hoy is tragic but it should not drive government policy.

@IanStockport @sillyoldjen @Azeem_Majeed I can't speak for diabetic retinopathy screening, but doing MRI scans isn't as easy as we might make it look.

Note that in my experience too many #NHS medics & others see what they want to see/are told to see/are biased & brainwashed to see; & that they choose to be 'unable to see' things that are blindingly obvious but inconvenient to them = incl outing their lies/incompetence+.

@sillyoldjen @IanStockport @Azeem_Majeed I mean 'bariatric', as in people who can't fit into a 70cm bore. Some people are so claustrophobic that even w/ their head out, they can't manage so larger bores will go some way to helping with that.

@elli_copter @IanStockport @Azeem_Majeed I assume that 'bariatric' means obese? Not all obese people are bariatric patients! Claustrophobia can mostly be overcome by leaving the head out = unless need to scan that of course & VR could easily help. Not here yet but it will = IF the will/money are there, & better than MRI

@sillyoldjen @IanStockport @Azeem_Majeed In the UK you are entitled to a copy of your images if you want them, and you can get a second opinion? MRI scanner tables do shake...that's normal, especially for certain sequences, like SWIs and DWIs.

@elli_copter @IanStockport @Azeem_Majeed I put up with all that for the 'comfort factor' of at last being allowed my complete & true results & diagnoses but am still many years ;later not allowed to know what I KNOW they can see in the images IF they were done correctly: last [UK] brain scanner shook/wobbled so much...

@sillyoldjen @IanStockport @Azeem_Majeed c) we've been scanning clinically since the late 1980s/early 1990s, and we haven't come across anything yet, which I'd say was a positive?

@sillyoldjen @IanStockport @Azeem_Majeed Well... a) there are risks, which is why we do a safety questionnaire before we scan you b) we don't know if MRI is "safe" in the way that I think you're getting at, because you cannot prove a negative... that being said...
