Jesse Jackson appeared on Sesame Street in 1973.
During his appearance, he famously led a group of children in reciting his well-known poem “I Am Somebody,” a message focused on self-worth and empowerment.
The segment became one of the most memorable celebrity appearances from the early seasons of the show.

🚨🇺🇸 Jesse Jackson has died at 84
2-time presidential candidate, civil rights legend, confidant to Martin Luther King Jr., and one of the most consequential Black political figures in American history.
He marched at Selma. He was standing next to King when he was assassinated. He ran for president twice and changed who gets to run in America.
Love him or hate him, Jackson spent 60 years refusing to let America forget its promises to Black people.
He outlived almost everyone who stood beside him in the movement.
Rest in peace.

Join me in honoring my mother, #CorettaScottKing, this #MLKDay.
I’m grateful for her commitment to freedom, true peace, justice, and nonviolence.
I’m inspired by her love for humanity, her faith in God, and her consistency to purpose.
Without her, there would be no federal holiday commemorating my father’s birthday.
And The King Center, which she founded less than three months after Daddy was assassinated, would not exist.
Salute, Mama.
