@M_Harding_ Two things petty busybodies need to stop doing on the internet:
English

@ethanhein Yeah this I don’t get. What scale do I play on a Cmaj7b5? Can I play an F or not?
English

@ethanhein But when someone teaches you that chord they tell you, here’s major 7, now you flatten it to get the dominant. They don’t say, raise the 6. I’m just saying the idea of raising and lowering is in there, maybe we’re not thinking about it all the time but it’s how it got built.
English

@ethanhein Totally. Casual and practical. It’s more legible if you’re sight reading to simplify the system - I learned harmony from jazz too and still prefer seeing flats.
English

@ethanhein Sure but in jazz you always make the distinction whether it’s a 4 that’s raised or a 5 that’s flattened. They imply different scales. The span between E and Bb in a C7 isn’t a raised 4, the Maj 7 B got flattened. What it “was” and how it is altered are always in mind.
English

@ethanhein If they are the same to you, your mental model isn't quite right. Scales, fourths, fifths, it’s all still cloudy. Future confusion awaits.

@TylerAlterman Bliss is not usually pursued for its own sake in music. Most traditions focus on becoming a beautiful experience for others. It wasn’t until I studied Hindustani music that it started to dawn on me that my own bliss matters. And I can go there every day.

@MajickShadow a story about where you came from and where you are going

@markmanson I remember Mr. Works telling us life was like going into a tunnel that got smaller and smaller until it became a coffin (!). Now at 40, I see that the narrowing of life can be done wisely; yes maybe I do the same things every day - but they’re MY FAVORITE THINGS

Very sad to hear this. Larry was one of the smartest people I ever met, inspiring and generous.
