Reflecting on My PhD Journey and Writing my Progress Report ✍️👇 I spent the major part of this week to reflect on #MyHallamJourney as I write my progress report (RF3) towards the completion of my PhD which is due in a few months time. Reflecting on the ambitious goals and plans I set in my first year and what I’ve been able to achieve so far, I could actually say that I have surpassed all my expectations and went beyond them. In my first year I attended series of policy events on employment and skills and presented my research objectives at the @CRESR_SHU PhD Forum and at the New Researchers stream of the Voluntary Sector Studies Network @VSSN_UK respectively in May and June 2022. These activities informed the intrinsic part of the research development and the design of thesis chapters. I also conducted a book review on Global Youth Unemployment: History, Governance and Policy by Fergusson and Yeates (2022), published on @PPP_Journal. I got my ethical approval and carried out 2 scoping interviews with two voluntary sector organisations (VSOs). During the early months of second year, I passed my RF2 assessment with no corrections and embarked on intensive fieldwork across Sheffield, Hull, and Leeds, engaging with experts in the voluntary sector and policymaking institutions. Another highlight for me was contributing to the Research England project on doctoral research and policy change published in the @SSRN journal. In my third year (this year), I finalized my fieldwork with follow-up interviews and workshops, published a second book review, and co-authored my first research article on the PPP Journal. I earned my AFHEA status and had the opportunity to present my research at five conferences, including the Sheffield Business School conference and symposium and the upcoming @ARNOVA conference in Washington, DC, where I’ll also chair a panel on advancements in AI and nonprofits. I was also recently made a potential Reviewer for the Voluntary Sector Review journal. Overall, I have four publications to my name so far and over eight conference presentations. I’m grateful for the journey and excited about the potential impact of my research on policy and practice. My thesis will also provide a comprehensive framework for the voluntary sector, funders and policymakers as it explores the experience of the voluntary sector from a context and place-based oriented perspectives. I look forward to what the post-PhD phase will unfold.

🚨Pay dispute declared🚨 Despite repeated requests UCU still refuses talks over the 2024/25 pay claim we submitted in April. Why would a trade union employer refuse to negotiate on pay? Our pay year begins on 1 August so we’re now 3 months into an effective pay freeze.

Hey @AstonUniversity, Glad you're improving your staff-student ratio. However, I'd appreciate it if you didn't use my face to advertise your new hires since you actively encouraged me/my colleagues to leave or made us redundant. #Translation & #languages at Aston are now closed.

Clearly I'm never going to do it, but as Citizen Con is currently being streamed into our living room, I do hope *someone* is doing a sociology of Star Citizen - in verse, IRL and at the points of intersection.

Four Years Anniversary 🎉 Today, I reflect on my fourth anniversary since arriving in the UK on the 10th of October 2020, and I’m filled with a deep sense of gratitude and introspection. Four years ago, I embarked on a journey that has not only expanded my worldview but also challenged me in ways I never expected. Coming from a different cultural and academic background, I found myself navigating a system that often held unspoken rules about identity, belonging, and expectations—some of which have been difficult to reconcile. My academic journey to the UK started with securing the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship @commschols to study at @CityUniLondon. That moment kickstarted a massive transition and transformation into the global education landscape, but at the same time exposes me to the surface of the challenges many international students are experiencing. For instance, I went from having to write the TOEFL exam twice to being told that my essays were "too grammatically correct for an international student" in addition to being frequently asked, “Where did you learn to speak and write English so well?” These experiences revealed underlying assumptions that follow many international students. Even more telling was encountering the institutional challenges that highlight the persistent degree-awarding gap between home and international students as well as post-study opportunities. To celebrate this anniversary, I’m honored to be presenting a paper at the upcoming @sheffhallamuni @HallamBTE Decolonising Management Studies and Research Symposium for Doctoral Students. My paper, titled “Navigating identity and belonging in the UK’s educational setting”, will delve into the lived experiences of international students as we traverse the landscape of globalised higher education. It will explore themes of identity, belonging, and how international students often find themselves in a state of ambiguity and flux as they negotiate academic and social spaces. As I stand at the intersection of these discussions, I am filled with optimism, knowing that my work and the work of so many others can and will continue to shape how we think about the future of academia from a lens of decolonisation. Here’s to four years of growth, resilience, and pushing boundaries, and to many more years of challenging the status quo. #DecolonisingEducation #InternationalStudents #PhDJourney #HigherEducation #DiversityInAcademia #IdentityAndBelonging

Today for Black History Month, I am paying tribute to Liverpool-born Emma Clarke who was the first Black female professional football player. She was also part of the first women’s team in the UK, the British Ladies founded in 1894.
