Surely @douglasdowney would have explained to him that he already DOES appoint the folks who decide bail? The VAST, VAST, VAST majority of bail decisions are made by Justices of the Peace and OCJ judges. They are all appointed by the Government of Ontario. Good Heavens.
Doug Ford@fordnation

Ontario deserves a real say in the appointment of judges making critical decisions on issues like bail reform, which directly impacts public safety in our province. This week, I joined several other premiers writing to Prime Minister Carney asking for judicial reform that respects provincial interests across Canada.

Proposing the elimination of bail all-together for certain offences is not striking a balance. It is a clear violation of the Charter and an extraordinary position to be endorsed by the police who are sworn to uphold it.
Police Association of Ontario (PAO)@PoliceAssocON

Effective bail reform must strike a balance between community safety and the rights of the accused. Today’s recommendations from Minister @BramptonGraham and @MPPKerzner highlights a strong commitment to public safety, accountability, and a fair justice system for all. #onpoli #cdnpoli

A new report says nearly 79 percent of people in Ontario jails are awaiting bail or trial. We don’t need stricter bail laws, but we do need bail reform. New podcast episode released today about this issue! Available wherever you listen to podcasts or on our website.

Hot take: instead of hiring more judges, prosecute fewer cases. Many cases aren't in the public interest, and scarcity of resources should force prosecutors to triage more judiciously. Because believe me: if you build it, they will come - courts will always be full to the brim.

New: Toronto sex assault case tossed over Ottawa’s failure to appoint Superior Court judges "Had the judicial positions in Toronto been filled, this case and others would not have been delayed" - Justice Maureen Forestell. thestar.com/news/crime/tor… via @torontostar

Roe v Wade is dead. It is no coincidence that we are watching abortion rights fall the same year the most anti-trans/lgbt laws have been passed in history. These are two sides of the same coin in the same fight and the same people are fighting with the same justifications.
