@QueenOfRats Saint Death's Daughter by C.S.E. Cooney is my top adult fantasy book of the last five years and it's not even close. addl under-the-radar picks: - The Wings Upon Her Back, Samantha Mills - Kalyna the Soothsayer, Elijah Kinch Spector - The Ballad of Perilous Graves, Alex Jennings

—m/f relationship. both are incredibly important. but i really, really want to see more sapphic/achillean aces, too. because i really do think this show i was watching made me accept myself more. so, basically: representation matters and i am begging for more of it.

cw // internalised aphobia i’ve been gaslighting myself for so many years now because i didn’t want to believe i’m asexual sex-repulsed but i just broke down after seeing a character come out as ace & i’m simply tired of pretending. 🧵 tldr: we need more (intersectional) rep

@seb_mancha Popping in to validate that this sentence is weird for me too! It's a ? rather than a * but it gives me the same feeling a sentence with a resumptive pronoun does – like I need to do something that's not perfectly grammatical because there's no better way to convey my meaning

@YeahThatCindy @duolingo Yeah, I check all of the boxes and then some on the job listing, so I was disappointed about the rejection! I've been hoping to get back into something linguistics-related. Thank you for getting back to me in any case! I'll just have to keep an eye out for future openings :)

@em_driscoll @duolingo Hi! Unfortunately I'm not on this team so I don't have particular insights! What I do know is it requires those things I mentioned above—MA, proficiency in 2 of the listed languages, and teaching expertise in a lang other than English.

“Being listed on the Wikipedia page for “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas”” was not on my 2024 prediction list.

CSECooney ducks in from time to time.
Whew. Just... whew. For you LeGuin/Dostoyevsky fans, and for those of you who know Omelas. And for those of you who don't. clarkesworldmagazine.com/kim_02_24/

Hey, read this. Stop. Go ahead. Read it. It'll take you 10 minutes. It'll change you probably forever. It's that good. Fuck. This is so good, @isabeljkim. Thank you for writing it. Damn. Damn damn damn. clarkesworldmagazine.com/kim_02_24/

@hankgreen Think you'd love The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler: philosophical near-future cli-fi meditating on the nature of consciousness Fantasy, not SF, but Saint Death's Daughter by CSE Cooney is a character/relationship-driven epic fantasy that somehow feels both classic and fresh

@AbeehaTariqArt a friend told me they spent half of Lessons in Chemistry crying, so if you're in the mood for light-hearted...maybe not that one? (they also said it was excellent though! just very sad along the way)

@hankgreen I believe this has to do with the role of the phonological rehearsal loop in working memory! been a minute since I read papers on the topic but tl;dr is that translating text into phonetic information happens separately from translating phonetic information into meaning

The thing where you can read a teleprompter and have no idea what you’re saying is totally real and I want to understand it neurologically. It feels related to the thing where you read a paragraph of a text book over and over without any comprehension.

@diabolicalplots Would it be technically difficult to implement this in such a way that "minimum pay (reprints)" only pops up for the user when "accepts reprints" is checked? So newcomers would only see "minimum pay (originals)." Reprint value overrides original iff "accepts reprints" is ticked.

@matt_boot_ they're homophonous in natural speech for me (both with [ɛ] or schwa), but if asked to hyperarticulate 'than' has [æ] and 'then' has [ɛ]
