On April 8, Israel launched its operation ‘Eternal Darkness’, the “largest coordinated wave of strikes” attacking 100 sites across Lebanon within 10 minutes, killing and wounding hundreds. One month on, justice is still not served. Civilians in Lebanon are already paying an unbearable price with children, health workers and journalists amongst those killed. States must immediately halt the transfer of arms and weapons to Israel given the overriding risk that they will be used to commit serious violations of international humanitarian law.

We are grateful for her contributions to Sri Lanka’s Civil Rights Movement, to Amnesty International Sri Lanka’s board in the 1970s, and to Amnesty’s human rights work around the world. In this photo, she is seen (4th from the left) as a member of Amnesty’s International Executive Committee accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977. Her steadfast commitment to standing with marginalized communities remains an enduring part of her legacy, one that continues to inspire others to fight for justice and resist with integrity and conviction. An Israeli court has again rubber-stamped injustice, extending Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s detention under the Unlawful Combatant Law, without a single charge . Dr. Abu Safiya remains imprisoned in Negev Prison, held in harsh conditions, denied essential medication and adequate medical care, despite his deteriorating health. This is cruel, unlawful, and punitive detention. A doctor should never be jailed for who he is or the people he serves. Arbitrary detention of Palestinian health workers is a grave crime that must end now. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, and of all arbitrarily detained Palestinian health workers.
