Sustainable forests are essential to both environmental health and economic resilience. The EMA, through the GEF BIOREACH Project, is taking decisive action to strengthen forest management practices, addressing past over-exploitation, protecting biodiversity, and supporting the long-term economic value of forest resources. These efforts are critical to sustaining livelihoods, supporting key industries, and maintaining ecological balance for present and future generations.   Historically, the Open Range Block Management System was used in Trinidad as a controlled timber harvesting method. Licensed sawmillers were permitted to harvest a specified number of approved trees within designated forest areas, with selections guided by the Forestry Division based on species, size, girth, and regeneration potential. Despite these controls, over-exploitation in some areas led to the discontinuation of the system in the 1990s, highlighting the need for more sustainable and adaptive approaches.    In response, the “Future Crop Tree” methodology has been introduced as a low-impact alternative that works with the forest’s natural structure. This approach focuses on identifying and nurturing high-value young trees by selectively removing competing vegetation that restricts their growth. By leaving more than 90% of the forest canopy intact, the method preserves biodiversity, protects wildlife habitats, and maintains essential ecosystem services, while improving the long-term productivity of valuable timber species.   To support the adoption of these improved practices, the EMA, under the GEF BIOREACH Project, recently completed a series of training workshops on Open Block Forest Management and Urban Forestry Management. The sessions were facilitated by FAO Consultant, Dr. Claus-Martin Eckelmann, a subject matter expert and former FAO Regional Forestry Officer with over thirty years of experience in forest management and ecology across Latin America and the Caribbean.    Swipe to view the photos.  Read, like, share!   #InternationalDayOfForests#ForestConservation#SustainableForestry#ProtectOurForests#NatureBasedSolutions #EMA Photo 1 Tree stands at Mt Harris Open Block Reserve, Tamana, Trinidad.   Photo 2 Dr. Claus-Martin Eckelmann with training participants at Mt. Turning Waste into Opportunity: Global Recycling Day 2026 and the iCARE Project Observed annually on Global Recycling Day, March 18 highlights recycling as a vital tool for protecting natural resources and advancing a circular economy, where materials are recovered, reused, and kept in productive use. In Trinidad and Tobago, the Recyclable Solid Waste Collection Project (RSWCP), branded as iCARE, is the country’s first national voluntary recycling initiative, providing accessible opportunities for citizens while promoting responsible waste management. Implemented by the Environmental Management Authority and funded by the Green Fund, iCARE continues to demonstrate how partnerships and community action can transform waste management. Since its inception, iCARE has installed 695 recycling bins nationwide, making it easier for citizens to recycle. The project has diverted approximately 8,780 metric tonnes of waste from landfills, with 2,696.96 metric tonnes processed, contributing to a 7% reduction in recyclable materials entering landfills. These efforts reflect the spirit of Global Recycling Day, which recognizes recycling as the “Seventh Resource,” alongside water, air, oil, coal, natural gas, and minerals. By encouraging a shift away from a throwaway culture, iCARE supports Trinidad and Tobago’s transition to a more sustainable, circular economy. These initiatives help shift attitudes away from a “throwaway culture” towards responsible consumption and waste management. Together, through recycling, we can transform waste into opportunity and move closer to a circular economy where nothing goes to waste. The EMA encourages all citizens to participate in recycling efforts and help build a cleaner, more sustainable Trinidad and Tobago. #EMA #recycle #environment #trinidadandtobago #reuse #REDUCE

🐢 The Giants Are Back! The 2026 Leatherback Turtle Nesting Season (1 March – 31 August) is underway in Trinidad and Tobago. These incredible animals are designated Environmentally Sensitive Species, highlighting the importance of protecting their nesting beaches and habitats. Recent nesting data shows both progress and challenges, reminding us that continued conservation, community support, and responsible beach use are essential to protecting these endangered giants. ema.co.tt/2026/03/12/med…#LeatherbackTurtles #SeaTurtleSeason #ProtectOurTurtles #TTBiodiversity #EMA 📷

That's why the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) BIOREACH project equipped Forestry Officers with new techniques and improved training and resources to manage the impact of forest fires on vulnerable ecosystems.  To date over 100 officers from the Forestry Division have been trained, over $300,000 in critical tools, equipment and PPE have been handed over, and 18 hectares of fire burnt hillsides restored in both Trinidad and Tobago.  A GIS-based wildfire management system has also been developed and implemented. Additionally, the project has also trained 36 persons from various communities in community-based wildfire management programme. The BIOREACH Project is jointly executed by the EMA and Namdevco. ➡ Learn how the FAO and its funding partner, Global Environment Facility work with the Government and communities on sustainable environmental management: bit.ly/3NsMerp Post courtesy: UN Trinidad & Tobago #trinidadandtobago #UN #environment
