To become a great athlete, there is one skill, above all others, that must be mastered. Some call it “bounce back,” others, “possessing a short memory.” Truth is “you have to care about your performance, but not too much.” Yea, I know that’s confusing. In other words, you have to care about your preparation, your effort, your teammates, being focused every pitch, and wanting to win. What you CANNOT care too much about is perfect performance. Having the skill to put mistakes behind you (very quickly) is a big separator. It separates good from great, and great from elite. Some people are born with the “I don’t give a crap” mindset after a mistake. I would call that a hidden blessing. Most others, however, are born with the “care too much” gene. Can you teach players to quickly let go of mistakes? I believe yes. It significantly helps if they play for a coach who does not live and die with every play in a game. And also having parents who take the good with the bad, winning and losing, all in stride helps tremendously. Providing players the “freedom to fail” (from physical mistakes) is key to developing this mental skill in players. Coaches also training the mentality of “quickly letting go” of physical mistakes in practice settings allows players to more successfully apply it in games. On the flip side….What can’t, and should not, be overlooked by coaches and parents, is lack of effort, lack of focus, and/or repeated mental lapses with in game IQ or situational awareness. That is something much different than letting go of player’s physical mistakes.
