The specialty training competition ratios released today are especially grim reading. How can we spend 7 years educating & training doctors only to leave them jobless because they’re competing with the entire world? We are simultaneously failing doctors and the taxpayer.

so what you’re saying is they provide a vital service for millions of people every day and probably ought to do so whilst well rested and properly compensated?

Best of luck to all the new FY1s starting careers as doctors today. The next few months will be a very steep learning curve and a rollercoaster of self confidence but you’ve earned the right to be where you are and it will get easier.

What a privilege to be tired from work you once begged the universe for. what a privilege to feel overwhelmed by growth you used to dream about. what a privilege to be challenged by a life you created on purpose. What a privilege to outgrow things you used to settle for.

On a personal note, I'm grateful to and proud of all the hospital leadership, consultants, and SAS who worked hard over the strike period to provide safe cover to patients. This includes my own trust in Liverpool, and my own department who went above and beyond in support
