It was so exciting to recently receive for the first time a hard copy of my soon-to-be-released memoir “Brainstorm” written with Garry Maddox! Despite being diagnosed with the brain cancer #glioblastoma in May last year, writing the book was an incredibly enjoyable experience and gave me the opportunity to reflect on my life’s journey. Looking back, I can now appreciate how my childhood, life experiences & presented opportunities have had an effect on the person I have become. I think this has also influenced my contributions to cancer diagnosis & research, of which I am very proud. My life has been so rewarding and I'm very grateful to the many people who have impacted my path through life. Hopefully I have plenty more to contribute & fun times to enjoy! You can order “Brainstorm” through the link below: allenandunwin.com/browse/book/Ri… @ausoftheyear @AllenAndUnwin @gmaddox @SydneyLHD @Sydney_Uni @SydOperaHouse #brainstorm

World Health Organization (WHO)
Avian influenza A (#H5N1) first emerged in 1996 but since 2020, we have seen an exponential growth in the number of outbreaks in birds. In addition to birds, an increasing number of mammals have been affected, e.g. minks, seals, sea lions and foxes. Recently, multiple herds of cows have been infected with avian influenza H5N1 viruses in the US. A dairy farm worker has also been infected. High concentrations of virus have been detected in milk from infected dairy cattle. The implications of this in terms of transmission is currently being investigated, as is the role of pasteurization in inactivation of the virus. Fantastic news!!!!!! Amazingly, my latest MRI brain scan shows no recurrence 10 months since my #glioblastoma presented with a seizure in #Poland. Median time to recurrence is 6 months. I’m extremely hopeful that the novel #neoadjuvant combination #immunotherapy I’ve had & the scientific changes we demonstrated in my tumour post versus pre immunotherapy are being translated into clinical benefit! I’d be thrilled & very proud if this novel approach makes a difference for me & future #brain #cancer patients. Thanks @ProfGLongMIA for devising & facilitating this superb approach & other members of multidisciplinary team including the @MelanomaAus team & other specialists @Dr_Brindha, Helen Wheeler, Michael Back & many others. Well done also to our @MelanomaAus translation research team including @HelenRizos! Special thanks for the ongoing support of my wife Katie, 3 kids Em, Matt & Luce, bro Mark, @subbie & many other family & friends! @SydneyLHD @Sydney_Uni @MelanomaAus @ausoftheyear

Have you had laser eye surgery in the last 6 to 24 months? If Yes, and you are in Melbourne, you may be eligible to participate in an eye research study. We are seeking volunteers, 18-45 years, able to attend four study visits over ~6 weeks at the University of Melbourne.
