Madatally Manji was the founder and owner of East Africa’s biggest biscuit manufacturer, “House of Manji.” According to Manji's Memoirs of a Biscuit Baron, Baring Arcade was officially opened on 21 March 1960 by Governor Sir Patrick Renison, and both the famous “Baring” biscuit and the building were named in honor of Renison's predecessor, Sir Evelyn Baring, who exited in 1959. Incidentally, Sir Baring had saved an Ismaili girl from drowning in Malindi, Kenya.
Manji was a third-generation Kenyan of Asian origin. His parents migrated from Homabay in 1908. His childhood was in Nyeri, Karatina and Murang’a, where his family operated a chain of shops and groceries. Manji brought into the country the popular breakfast cereal, Weetabix.
