With the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC came a theory that Radahn is controlled by Miquella. I broke down why this theory isn't just wrong, but how it also makes the story worse. Full document here: docs.google.com/document/d/1Yl… Or you can read the 🧵 below 👇 #ELDENRING

I guess the reason I'm dooming less over this than most people is that I'm assuming jacksepticeye is only producing and there will actually be proper writers and a director rather than some YouTuber actually making the movie himself.

@Jahlvardravito Honestly I had always assumed they were immune to statuses other than frostbite until you brought this up. They do seem to have above average resistances but not nearly as much as you'd expect for stone-scaled dragons.

@empyrealviolet i personally think they should've made them immune to bleed and maybe resist poison since their whole deal is being sturdy with rocky skin, so i don't mind the heavy stance resistance

Elden Ring adds stance-breaking (cool mechanic) and it especially feels good on ranged builds using them to knock down a dragon. And yet some genius had the idea to give Ancient Dragons hard-coded stance resistance making it functionally impossible to do it to them.

@RahulS69696 It's like 80% stance resistance on the body and 60% on the head or something if I remember reading the wiki correctly. It might be theoretically possible to pull off a stance break but no matter how aggressively I play I've never pulled it off. I haven't even seen the animation!

@empyrealviolet Ohh I didn't know they have hard cded stance resistance. I checked the reg bins and their stance was 120, though it feels more like 1.2 trillion stance bcoz i can never stance break them. Stance breaking radahn ( 200 stance ) is easier than stance breaking sennesax🤢

@thefifthbanana I haven't played much Nightreign but this is nice to know. I'll gladly take any improvement to these fights, no matter how small.

@empyrealviolet also nightreign makes it easier to target onto them, which isnt present in base elden ring

To be charitable, the intent here is clear. Ancient Dragons are made of stone, they are inherently more durable than their fleshy cousins, so it's harder to stagger them. But awkwardly swinging at an Ancient Dragon's hind legs is way less cool than having it in full view.

Regular dragons are some of my favorite fights in the game. I love zooming around the open world on Torrent lobbing projectiles at the dragon before I knock it down and close in for big damage. And then the ancient dragons feel really lame and clunky by comparison.

@ValoftheNorth1 And even on a more subjective emotional level, Freyja's entire story being "She stupidly misinterpreted Radahn's will and then died for it" is far less satisfying to me than the version in which she is factually correct but nonetheless morally wrong (Miq's age is doomed to fail)

@ValoftheNorth1 *least developed Comparatively, Ansbach and Freyja are two of the most prominent characters in the DLC, whose quests set the stage for the final battle. None of which particularly works if they're both morons who can't be bothered to say what they actually mean.

I remember seeing a response like this when I originally posed the theory a few years ago and I think it sort of diminishes FromSoft's roles as artists. Just because they don't directly give you answers doesn't mean they don't have any conclusions they're guiding you towards.
duvetcover@duvettcoverr

@empyrealviolet You’re not right about anything, It’s an interpretation. FS deliberately builds its worlds with ambiguity, leaving just enough lore for players to piece together their own theories That openness is part of the design There is no right or wrong unless the game objectively says so

@ValoftheNorth1 Your version of events is interesting, don't get me wrong, but it is very clearly not the story I'm seeing in front of me when I play Elden Ring.

@ValoftheNorth1 And to me, for a character in her position who knew Radahn to learn that the reason Malenia fought her fellow soldiers was to transport Radahn to the Land of Shadow to serve as Miquella's Lord, and believe that his wishes are being honored, I have little reason to doubt her.
