@EM203FOmar Absolutely - we need a multi-level approach that addresses prevention (food & housing security, childcare, basic income) and early intervention (mental health care). We know the most devastating effects for parents & children occur when mental illness is prolonged and severe.

@_LaRoos In your opinion, what steps can be taken to mitigate the pandemic's impact on mental health? I understand increasing awareness regarding better self-care, unplugging from media etc are valuable, but what about steps such as government subsidies for mental health?

@EM203FOmar Hi Fatima. In South Africa, access to public clinics and hospitals in mostly free or low cost, so access to mental health care remains affordable. The issue is equitable spread of healthcare workers, especially psychologists, who remain concentrated in urban cities.

@DrBBouffard @celliottability Thank you for your thoughts!. Even as a student with health insurance I see that I am only covered for $500 a year in case I need support from a psychologist. Going by some of the costs of such therapy, that would be less than four sessions. These are great initiatives 👍

@DrBBouffard Hi Dr Bouffard! I am researching ways of mitigating the impact of COVID-19 on mental health for a course and believe that government subsidizing of mental health services could be an important step. Could you please share your thoughts on the attached brief slide?

4⃣ The NHS should prepare for both a 'V-shaped' and a 'W-shaped' recession during the next five years, with resources to respond either to a single, deep recession this year or to a series of economic shocks each of which will create additional need for mental health support.

3⃣ The NHS should develop proactive, tailored #MentalHealth support to people who have received hospital treatment for Covid-19, to people who are working in health &care services with people with Covid-19, and to people who have experienced a bereavement.

While it is normal to feel worried during this pandemic, we cannot let it overwhelm us. Avoiding information overload, having realistic fears, helping others and self care are all important. We are all in this together!
