Is Israel’s massive escalation in Lebanon, particularly attacks on the south suburbs of Beirut, part of Trump testing Iran via its Israeli proxy? Iran has repeatedly demanded that Israeli attacks on Beirut stop and has signaled that continued escalation in Lebanon could jeopardize diplomatic efforts. The Israelis cannot attack Beirut without approval from Donald Trump and they cannot sustain a war of this scale without American political, military and diplomatic backing. Donald Trump has the power to restrain Israel if he chooses but he remains either unwilling or is allowing an escalation for leverage against Iran. If Iran has drawn a red line around Beirut, allowing Israel to threaten or attack Beirut may be a way of testing how much Iran is willing to tolerate, how it will respond and whether it’s prepared to risk broader escalation. As for the Israelis, if they had their way they would be at permanent war until there’s no one left to displace. They’re using this opportunity to destroy as much as they can until a bigger settlement applies at least some limits.
