nasir al-din tusi’s genius reversal on god’s foreknowledge being incompatible with free will.
in Takhliṣ al-Muḥaṣṣal 1.478 he writes:
“What has been said regarding the proof of compulsion (al-jabr) is that: the opposite of what Allah knows will occur is impossible, and this necessitates compulsion.
The response: This is answered by noting that Allah, Exalted is He, has eternally known His actions in what will always be. If from this it were necessary that compulsion and obligation fall upon the servant, then it would also be necessary with respect to Allah. And what you have responded with there is the response here as well. [Meaning: if foreknowledge = no free will, then God himself has foreknowledge of his acts, this must necessitate that god himself lacks free will! which is false]
The correct response is that knowledge of something does not necessarily cause it. For instance, the one who knows that the sun will rise tomorroow, his knowledge is not the cause of its rising. And if knowledge has no effect on the action, then the action is not necessarily by compulsion or obligation. And Allah knows best.”
