Well my pc just died - cpu over tempatute. Won't boot. I suspect the aio liquid cooler is dead. The pc was custom built and cost $4k which I don't have to build another one. I don't even have the money for a new cooler. Every time I get a plan to make my life better something blocks me from advancing. 1200 behind in property taxes. Dead pc. Banned from Claude. (use it to fix my dyslexic hand written code) No job prospects. Launguage processing software doesn't work anymore. Weeks since last blog post. I might hang this shit up. Rust serde binary serialization. The wire format uses integer tags. I'm going to kms. I dislike Rust intensely.

@NotNordgaren at this point we're just gonna use cdb, set a few breakpoints and try to grab all the pipe names verbatim.

@NotNordgaren for this target, ida seemed to handle it well, i even got full 'source' so to speak in an index.node that's how i got as far as i have. still struggling though because it seems like only one thing can talk through this pipe at a time. :P

C is great! I like Rust, but I know C as well. The majority of things I have to RE are still C. One of the things I like Rust for is that most decompilers don't really handle it well sometimes. Rust compiler can do some crazy optimizations that just make a function look like it has less arguments than it does, etc.

@NotNordgaren I honestly was gonna spend a few hours in ida and python figuring it out, then write my own in C instead. I suck at rust, I'm lazy. I know C. I know if i want to be a purist that i'm going to have to *try* giving a shit about rust. Thanks for the pointers. <3

You're doing packet serialization, right? You can try tagging a union with `#[repr(u8)]`. I assume that's what you're using, right? Otherwise you can also define the enum for the tag with all the variants and then store them in a C like union with this: doc.rust-lang.org/reference/item… The safest approach is to define the data strictly and not let the compiler do magic, but iirc the tagged union should work with that repr.
