It was 16 years ago this month that I checked my bank account one Friday afternoon. I had only $6 in it. "How are we going to pay for dinner?" I asked my boyfriend Daniel. "Don't worry," he said. "I know somewhere we can get a free dinner. It's called Chabad." "What's Chabad?" I asked. "It's a Jewish organization that hosts Jews for Friday night dinner," Daniel said. "Just don't tell the rabbi you aren't Jewish." "Sure," I said. When we walked into that Chabad house on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the rabbi with kind eyes greeted us with a smile. His family welcomed us with open arms. The other people there so nice. It was at this Chabad house where I experienced joy, love, and community, where I felt something warm in my chest that washed over my entire body, and a thought in my head: "This is God." I started believing in God again. I asked Daniel if we could do Friday night dinner every week. Judaism answered so many questions I had, and I felt like I was coming home. I ended up converting to Judaism five years later. Daniel went back and asked that Chabad house rabbi, "Did you know that Kylie wasn't Jewish?" "Yes," he said, laughing. "It's OK though." I had never experienced that kind of unconditional kindness before. Chabad and the entire Jewish community continue to amaze me--they love all people, they are willing to help, and they just want to make the world a better place. I am so glad I joined the Jewish people. Best decision I've ever made.
