🏠🎾 How do you think the home-field advantage in Tennis affects betting? Do you believe it's better to bet on the local player or the opponent? I've got the data. 👇 🛠 Since 2010, I have collected a total of 7,552 ATP main draw matches in which a player competed in their home country against an opponent from another nation. Encounters between two players from the same country are obviously excluded. 📊 This represents the potential return on investment (or Yield) if we had placed bets without considering any specific factors, whether on all the local players or on all their opponents: • Yield Locals: -4.80% (avg. odds: 3.30) • Yield Opponents: -3.50% (avg. odds: 2.76) So, we can infer that the home field advantage is already factored into the odds. As some studies have shown, there may be a home field effect in the sense that local players win more matches. However, in terms of betting, which is what interests us, there is no advantage in betting on the local player. The reason for the lower yield of the home players could be attributed to the fact that their average odds are higher. Consequently, in accordance with the favorite-longshot bias theory, bookmakers might apply a slightly higher margin on them. Also, the market might also overprice them. Another question to consider is whether there is any variation by country. There is, but I'll save that for another time. 😉 To ensure the data holds some validity, we need a minimum sample size. The countries with the most data (number of matches with local players that play at home) are, in descending order, the USA, France, Spain, Germany and Australia. By the way, according to the survey I posted this morning, 41.1% got it right.
