@PhDVoice @PostdocVoice I've encouraged my grad students to include any sizable project in their thesis as a chapter (or subchapter) even if it led to a dead end or only preliminary data that hasn't yet been published.

@spjuraschek For R01s and most other NIH grants, the references are not included in the page limits. So use what you want. I like the American Journal of Physiology format but make sure the citations are sequential and not alphabetical.

@Aidrisdiran We could take a doctoral student as part of their thesis work from another institution. We have done this on several prior occasions and on some of these the student has elected to return to our lab for a post-doc after graduation.
