2435. Quick things to note: According to this, I see that UoN offers Bsc. Agricultural Engineering and Bsc. Biosystems Engineering - all offered independently. It is common knowledge that there is usually a Bsc. Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering. Now at JKUAT, there is a Bsc. Agricultural Engineering - totally independent from Bsc. Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering (still being offered in the same university). Since I do not know how it goes, can someone with knowledge of the 3 areas put me (and others like me) in the know.

A proposal has been tabled to amend Sec34 (1,a) of the VAT Act & do away with the Kes 5.0 Million annual turnover for VAT registration. The Kenya Revenue Authority argues that doing away with the threshold & making VAT registration apply to all (businesses & non-PAYE income earning individuals) will address the estimated 38.0% VAT collections gap & lift collections from Kes 653.0 billion to > Kes 1.03 trillion. If the proposal is adopted, it will be a radical departure from the Medium-term Revenue Strategy 2024/25 – 2026/27 which proposed to increase the VAT registration threshold in a bid to make tax compliance a lot easier. Business Daily reports that KRA is planning to enforce a 16% VAT on small traders by scrapping the KES 5M registration threshold. All businesses, including small traders, will be required to register as VAT agents and remit monthly collections The move expands the tax base but is expected to drive price increases across everyday goods and services

KRA plans to make it mandatory for all businesses, even small traders, to register for VAT. This means businesses and small traders will add 16% tax, which will make prices of goods go up.

Limo, I’m sure you’ve heard me calling built environment professionals over such cases. Until the day you guys shall crack your own whip….like increasing personal vigilance to ensure your design doesn’t go to construction without your knowledge and involvement of other reputable professionals, then this monkey shall remain on your shoulders. Architects, engineers, QSs and others must stop sitting back to watch deaths and death traps behind inhabited. Only you guys can stop this mess. Other institutional safeguards are weak or have failed. Take up the professional vigilance and enforcement role to end this impunity.

First, i would like to send my sincere condolences to the family that lost a loved one during the collapse and send a quick recovery message to those in hospitals recuperating. While I was the design architect, the client, upon receiving the approval drawings and NCA permit as required by the law, we asked him to employ the services of a reputable contractor and share a work program so we could do periodic inspections. The guy went quiet. We never heard from him until the day the building collapsed. The structural engineer was also not aware of the construction having begun. We shall let due process take its effect and hope developers can learn from this to avert future loss of lives and properties
