Stan Mortensen opened the scoring with a header from a Jimmy Mullen cross late in the first half, and Wilf Mannion doubled the lead soon after the break, finishing low after a move involving Tom Finney and Mortensen. The performance was far from fluent, but it was enough to justify the “Kings of Football” billing the Brazilian press had given England going into the tournament.
