2⃣3⃣ Czechoslovakia 0-1 England, 11 June 1970, Guadalajara
England’s final group game at the 1970 World Cup brought a narrow 1-0 win over Czechoslovakia at the Estadio Jalisco. Allan Clarke, making his England debut - how can you make a debut in a World Cup match?🤯 - coolly converted a disputed penalty early in the second half to secure victory and a place in the quarter-finals.
It was a stuttering performance in the Mexican heat, with Gordon Banks forced into one spectacular save to tip a long-range shot onto the bar, but Alf Ramsey’s side did just enough to progress from a tricky group that also contained Brazil and Romania.

2⃣4⃣ Slovenia 0-1 England, 23 June 2010, Port Elizabeth
England’s final group game at the 2010 World Cup was a must‑win, and they scraped through thanks to Jermain Defoe’s first‑half strike in Port Elizabeth. Defoe reacted sharply to turn in James Milner’s low cross, and England then held firm as Slovenia pushed for an equaliser.
For a brief spell, it felt like a turning point: England were through to the last 16, but news of the USA’s late winner against Algeria meant Fabio Capello’s side would face Germany as group runners‑up. And we all know what happened there.

2⃣5⃣ England 2-0 Tunisia, 15 June 1998, Marseille
England opened their 1998 World Cup campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over Tunisia at the Stade Vélodrome. Alan Shearer headed in from close range just before half-time, and Paul Scholes curled in a superb second from the edge of the box in the closing minutes to seal the points.
On the pitch, it was a routine win and a solid start for Glenn Hoddle’s side in Group G, but events off the field were far less edifying, with serious crowd trouble involving England fans marring the occasion in Marseille.

2⃣6⃣ Tunisia 1-2 England, 18 June 2018, Volgograd
England’s 2018 World Cup campaign began with a dramatic late win over Tunisia in Volgograd. Harry Kane put England in front early, after 'keeper Hassen had clawed out Stone's header, but Tunisia were very generously given a penalty when Walker was adjudged to have blocked off Fakhreddine. Sassi gobbled up the gift.
However, deep into stoppage time, England played a well-worked corner routine - corner, flick-on, header at back post - for Kane to snatch victory. England created plenty in the first half but faded after the break, but could have felt aggrieved had it finished 1-1. Their 2018 World Cup campaign was up and running.

2⃣7⃣ England 2-0 Trinidad & Tobago, 15 June 2006, Nuremberg
England toiled for long spells against stubborn opposition before two late goals finally broke Trinidad & Tobago’s resistance in Nuremberg. Peter Crouch headed in from a David Beckham cross with seven minutes left, and Steven Gerrard sealed the win with a thumping injury‑time strike from the edge of the box.
It was another laboured display from a heavily‑favoured side, but the result guaranteed England’s place in the knockout rounds and briefly eased the mounting pressure on Sven‑Göran Eriksson’s “Golden Generation.”

@OliJacobs4 @England Ooh, I love a good overreaction. There’s a few I don't agree with but “complete embarrassment”? Please explain?

@JAMES77458423 Indeed, I find it unfathomable that ANY player can be given their first cap in a World Cup Finals match, but it happened eight times, even to the great Allan Clarke.

@englandstats Laurie Hughes played all three games in that World Cup, and remains the only England player who's career only includes World Cup matches

2⃣8⃣ England 2-0 Chile, 25 June 1950, Rio de Janeiro
England’s first ever World Cup match ended in a 2-0 win over Chile at the Maracanã. Stan Mortensen opened the scoring with a header from a Jimmy Mullen cross late in the first half, and Wilf Mannion doubled the lead soon after the break, finishing low after a move involving Tom Finney and Mortensen.
The performance was far from fluent, but it was enough to justify the “Kings of Football” billing the Brazilian press had given England going into the tournament. Sadly, these would be the only goals England scored at the 1950 World Cup, as the campaign quickly unravelled in the infamous defeats to the USA and Spain.

2⃣9⃣ Romania 0-1 England, 2 June 1970, Guadalajara
England began their 1970 World Cup defence with a 1-0 win over Romania at the Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara. Geoff Hurst, the hero of 1966, again proved decisive, drilling his shot through the goalkeeper’s legs midway through the second half to settle a tight contest.
It was a solid, if unspectacular, opening performance against awkward opposition in the Mexican heat, and it set Alf Ramsey’s side up in a tough group that also contained eventual champions Brazil.

Z jednym rywalem mecz i rewanż.
Zespoły z rankingu UEFA z miejsc 37-54 będą mieć swoje eliminacje i zapewnione łącznie 2 miejsca.
Do tego dochodzi jeszcze opcja awansu z Ligi Narodów.
Zmiana ma na celu ograniczenie meczów typu Anglia-San Marino.

3⃣0⃣ England 1-0 Ecuador, 25 June 2006, Stuttgart
England edged past Ecuador 1-0 in the Round of 16 thanks to a trademark David Beckham free-kick on the hour mark in Stuttgart. Beckham, reportedly struggling with illness, curled the ball in from around 30 yards, finally breaking Ecuador’s stubborn resistance.
Aside from the goal, it was another laboured display from Sven-Göran Eriksson’s side, who were briefly rescued earlier when Carlos Tenorio’s deflected shot came back off Ashley Cole and onto the crossbar. Still, the win nudged the so‑called “Golden Generation” into yet another quarter-final.

3⃣1⃣ England 1-0 Paraguay, 10 June 2006, Frankfurt
England’s 2006 World Cup began with a scrappy 1-0 win over Paraguay in Frankfurt. The decisive moment came early, when a David Beckham free-kick was flicked into his own net by Paraguayan captain Carlos Gamarra.
The game quickly lost its rhythm in the heat, with Michael Owen withdrawn early in the second half and England retreating into themselves rather than pushing for a second. It was a low-key start for a side talked up as contenders, but the three points ultimately set up their progress from the group.

3⃣2⃣ Egypt 0-1 England, 21 June 1990, Cagliari
England’s final Group F match at Italia ’90 brought a narrow 1-0 win over Egypt in Cagliari. Mark Wright scored the only goal of the game midway through the second half, glancing in a Paul Gascoigne free-kick to secure England’s place in the knockout stages.
It was a cautious, attritional match against a deep‑defending Egypt side, and in one of the closest group stages of any World Cup, this game was the only one with a result. All the other games in the group resulted in draws. With both the Netherlands and Ireland having identical records and both assured of qualification to the next round, lots were drawn to decide their paths.

3⃣3⃣ England 2-0 France, 20 July 1966, Wembley
England’s final group game at the 1966 World Cup saw them beat France 2-0 at Wembley to secure top spot in Group 1. Roger Hunt scored both goals, one in each half, finishing from close range after good work from Jimmy Greaves and the forward line.
France needed a 2-0 win to qualify, but rarely threatened, and England comfortably saw the game out to reach the quarter-finals without conceding a goal in the group stage.

3⃣4⃣ Kuwait 0-1 England, 25 June 1982, Bilbao
England’s final group game at the 1982 World Cup saw them edge past Kuwait 1-0 at San Mamés in Bilbao. Trevor Francis scored the only goal after 28 minutes, finishing from close range to secure a third straight group win.
The match itself was fairly routine, with England already looking assured of progress and Kuwait offering little threat. Still, the victory meant Ron Greenwood’s side advanced to the second phase with a perfect record from Group 4. The only time in a major competition that England have won all three group games.

3⃣5⃣ England 0-0 Netherlands, 16 June 1990, Cagliari
England’s second group game at Italia ’90 was a goalless draw with the reigning European champions, the Netherlands, in Cagliari. Bobby Robson switched to a sweeper system with Mark Wright at the heart of the defence, and Paul Gascoigne produced a coming‑of‑age display in midfield as England largely kept Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten quiet.
Stuart Pearce thought he had won it late on with a drilled free-kick that flew straight in, but the referee had signalled for an indirect free-kick and the “goal” was ruled out, leaving England to settle for a point. At this point, all the games in the group had finished as draws, so the next match against Egypt would be vital.
