As a result, residents had to travel considerable distances to retrieve their mail, leading to widespread inconvenience and frustration. Cox continued to receive her salary while the situation remained unresolved. The episode, later called the “Indianola Affair,” attracted national attention and underscored both the racial tensions of the Jim Crow era and Roosevelt’s willingness to challenge local discrimination despite political risk.
