#298WLU1 I think Harriet plays a positive impact in influencing other young girls to be as self aware and conscious of their thoughts as she is through the use of her journal, it is important for kids to be able to have a place in which they can use as an outlet.
@SimranMannEN285 You are right! But I think it is great for tweens who have grown up in such a society that all of this is normalized , for their society norms to be turned upside down.
#285WLU10 bleah is a rather refreshing writer as he does not stray away from emotions and dark moments that rather other writers wouldn’t. He talks about his life experiences as they were, giving raw facts and telling his story that touches the reader.
#285WLU9 The theme of home is highly prevalent in Brown Girl Dreaming. At first, South Carolina is her only home and nothing else, especially New York, can replace it. Over time, home becomes a more figurative word encompassing her relationships rather than the place itself.
#285WLU9 I have such a deep appreciation for how the book, brown girl dreaming portrayed the importance of a grandparent role in a young adolescent’s life. The words and wisdom that come from those who have been here longer than us adds value to the kids
@AlexandraGeitz I agree with you! Children often look towards books Nd movies as outlets for their imagination, so this book gives a great insight on why the home away from home can help the main character grow into their own personalities Nd characters
The graveyard book gives a different perspective of stereotypical things, they portray good things as bad and bad as good, giving a fresh outlook on heavy and otherwise things that would be considered dark in real life #285WLU8
@SamanthaPrior8 This definitely stood out to me as well! Giving these characters a more mature mentality than their age helps spread across the message and be able to teach those who are reading
One thing that stood out to me was how intelligent Scarlett and Bod were at the age of five when they encounter the 'indigo man' and how they realize that it is just a decoy meant to scare people away. I forgot for a moment that they were young as they seemed older. #285WLU7
This book has a very specific topic that normally is not talked about in books for the younger demographic which is death, but as unsettling it may be to learn this at a young age, it is also something important that needs to be normalized more among kids. It prepares them for
@ZohaHaiderEN285 I agree! Tweens are so focused on becoming older due to the outlets and marketing schemes they are exposed to all around them without realizing
Linn brings up an interesting point of how “marketing in schools is terribly troubling”. Companies target tweens as they are easily and inevitably influenced by what’s considered trendy. This isn’t always good because nowadays, children don’t really have a childhood... #285WLU6
#285WLU6 as we get more and more surrounded by technologies and social media’s, you can see that where once a child would normally be spending their childhood outside playing and all is now on social media and more interested in things on the internet rather than outside
@nonameforyou I love the message that char sent across, he was different than the typical Prince Charming that we encounter in stories, he shows young tweens how men are suppose to treat women in a real life scenerio
“I trust you to find the good in me, but the bad I must be sure you don’t overlook.” - Char. An important reminder to tweens that healthy relationships involve loving the good and bad traits we all have. Ella was accepted by Char for who she was. Imagine that! #285WLU5
Ella really is a strong character who portrays extensive character development, although she may have always been wise, the curse put on her came as a blessing in disguise and taught her the act of patience and wisdom #WLU285W5
I think Ellas curse is suppose to portray a teens journey through adulthood with their parents. Having to obey your parents at a young age but slowly as you get older starting to question and stray away and that’s what Ella does when she finds loopholes to the orders given to her
