Few years ago, I lodged in a hotel because there was no light in my apartment. Around 12:05am, I heard a loud, piercing scream coming from the room next to mine. At first, I ignored it, but when the noise became intense and continuous, I called the receptionist to check on it. She didn’t respond. So I went to the door myself and knocked. Immediately, the screaming reduced drastically, but I could still hear a muffled humming sound — like someone’s mouth was tied or covered. I knocked again. A male voice replied, “We’re fine.” As I turned to leave, I heard hurried movement toward the door from inside, like someone desperately rushing. That was when I knew something was seriously wrong. I knocked harder and said firmly, “This is Inspector David. I received a distress call. Open this door right now!” When the door opened, I was shocked. A young girl was lying naked on the bed, weeping bitterly, with her hands tied to the bedpost. When I asked what happened, she said the last thing she remembered was going out with the guy to a lounge. They ate and drank and that was all. She had no idea how she ended up in the hotel room. The heartbreaking part? She was a virgin before that night. Moral: Don’t assume. Don’t ignore screams. Sometimes what looks like “fun” is actually a cry for help. Be vigilant. Be your brother’s keeper.
