Is electric aviation the Answer? Here's what's coming From electric aircraft and hydrogen propulsion to smarter air traffic management and sustainable aviation fuels, the industry is exploring multiple pathways to decarbonise – not just one silver bullet. System-wide innovation is key to reaching the industry's goal of net zero carbon emissions: ✈️More efficient flight paths ⚡ Electrification of short-haul routes 🌱 Scaling sustainable aviation fuels 🛰️ Digital airspace optimisation Each solution on its own may seem incremental. But together, they represent a fundamental shift in how aviation operates. 🎥 Watch the video by EARTH 2050 below to learn more: ataglink.org/4uX9ChA

Decarbonising civil aviation comes with a significant bill: $4.7 trillion. While investments are already fuelling SAF production, new aircraft and more and more jobs in the industry, a lot more needs to be done to secure financing for aviation’s energy transition. And while $4.7 trillion sounds staggering, the cost of inaction would be even higher, driven by an increase capital financing rates, fragmented carbon pricing from uncoordinated climate policies and escalating insurance and adaptation costs driven by climate-related disruptions and infrastructure damage. Committing to net zero carbon and pursuing every feasible measure to achieve it is therefore not only an environmental necessity, it is the surest way to safeguard long-term competitiveness and retain the trust of customers, investors, and society at large. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is the primary lever for reaching net zero carbon, offering up to 80% reduction in lifecycle emissions compared to fossil fuels. To reach net zero, we need to scale production up to 430-500 million tonnes annually by mid-century! Achieving these targets is still achievable but will require significant additional efforts from all stakeholders. The energy transition of civil aviation does not come without challenges: tech maturity, feedstock supply and cost remain real obstacles, but the industry is making progress, working together towards a common goal: ➡️ Over 170 airports are already distributing SAF today ➡️ 140 SAF production projects are underway by more than 100 companies across 31 countries ➡️ More than 50 airlines representing 45% of global traffic have announced voluntary goals for SAF from 5%-30% of their 2030 fuel supply Learn more about the role of SAF in aviation’s energy transition in the latest edition of Waypoint 2050: aviationbenefits.org/other-environm…

Updating the global fleet of civil aircraft is a massive undertaking. Right now, about a third of the world’s aircraft are already of the latest and most fuel-efficient generation, and we are preparing for another 15,000 high-efficiency aircraft to join them soon. Modern aircraft already deliver substantial fuel and emissions savings compared to older models, providing immediate environmental benefits as previous generations are replaced. Now it’s time to address remaining supply chain challenges to ensure timely delivery of these aircraft while accelerating research and development of more efficient aircraft technologies such as unconventional airframe and propulsion configurations, hybridisation, electric and hydrogen power. Reaching net zero carbon emissions for civil aviation is the challenge of a lifetime. While the industry’s joint climate goal to fly carbon neutral by 2050 is more recent, air transport has been working towards reducing its climate impact over the past decades. Since 1990, civil aviation has managed to cut CO2 emissions per seat kilometre by 54%! 🚙 To put that into perspective, the efficiency of a modern aircraft today is roughly 50g of CO2 per seat kilometre, comparable to the footprint of an average-occupancy small car. As a result, global aviation has avoided 14.6 billion tonnes of CO2 over the last decades. As we look toward the 2050 goal, we are not starting from scratch, but the time has come to act and accelerate the progress already underway. Find out more: aviationbenefits.org/other-environm…

The net-zero pathway and roadmap of actions are essential to align the sector with global climate action and meet society's demand for more sustainable mobility. It is an important framework to encourage investment, support jobs and create the right conditions for the continued growth in the economic and social benefits of air travel around the world. Many of the required foundations are in place. Now, urgent action is required to accelerate the scale-up and deployment of key measures to reduce carbon emissions. However, there is no silver bullet and no single pathway to 2050. The industry's Waypoint 2050 report lays out two scenarios on how the global air transport sector can reach net zero carbon emissions through a mix of sustainable aviation fuel deployment, operational efficiency measures and technological innovation as well as market-based measures. Net zero carbon by 2050 is more than a headline for aviation. It is backed up by a concrete plan built on sustainable aviation fuel deployment, operations and infrastructure improvements, technological innovation and market-based measures. The updated Waypoint 2050 report shows how far the aviation sector has come and what needs to happen now to ensure global air transport can reach its net zero goal by 2050. From bringing in ever more efficient aircraft, to modernising how we manage airspace, rapidly scaling sustainable aviation fuel and using high‑quality carbon removals: There is a 5-year window to accelerate progress. But aviation cannot fly this route alone. Governments, energy and finance sectors must help build the policies, infrastructure and investment pipelines that make decarbonisation possible at global scale.
