I wouldn't consider myself a 'glass half full' kind of guy, especially given how things have gone with the program lately, but this pickup makes a ton of sense for a number of reasons.

Before playing at Hawaii, Weaver was the starter at Modesto JC for two years, throwing for 5,332 yards 44 TD’s and leading Modesto to back-to-back valley conference titles. #SJSU

QB Luke Weaver's transfer from Hawai'i to San Jose State is a move back home near his hometown of Manteca, Calif. (SJSU nearest G5 school) with an opportunity to win starting job. Also joins a QB room that includes Kapolei's Tama Amisone & Daniel Rolovich, son of Nick Rolovich.

Here’s the bad news: Black Hat Football’s founder Richard T. Estrada died of a massive heart attack this Sunday morning. The good news is that Saturday night he had picked his 209 Black Hat Football Players of the Year for 2025. Anybody who knew The Hat knew he had terrible handwriting. But thanks to the help of his friend and long-time sports writing colleague Will DeBoard (the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section’s current assistant commissioner), his messy notes were transcribed. Estrada launched Black Hat Football in December 2012, and this is his 14th and final high school football team of the year for the 209 area code. Most Valuable Player — Wes Burford, Oakdale Offensive Player of the Year – Kenneth Moore III, St. Mary’s Defensive POY –- Steven Morfoot, Sonora Lineman of the Year – Avery Michael, Turlock Junior of the Year - Nikko Juarez, RB, Manteca Sophomore of the Year – Elijah Walker, QB, Chavez QB – Eli Ingalls, Sonora QB – Jaden Galvan, St. Mary’s RB – Elias Haynes, Downey RB – Brayden Camara, East Union RB – Darnell Holmes, Stagg RB – Cash Byington, Sonora WR – Ivan Huerta, St. Mary’s WR – Yuvraj Balagan, Kimball WR – Langdon Horace, Edison WR – Sylas Austin, Atwater OL – Mason Dunn – St. Mary’s OL – Broden Bush, Oakdale OL – Daniel Mataele, Patterson OL – Leo Morfin, Central Catholic OL – Brodie Lundgren, St. Mary’s K – Rigo Estrella, Sonora Utility – Jackson Fay, East Union DL – Maxwell Moore, Tracy DL- Francis Taamu, Edison DL – Nathan Mockey, Downey DL – Jake Lucatello, St. Mary’s DL – Xyloh Kuresa, Manteca LB – Fallon Barquet, Lincoln LB – Brandon Peel, Merced LB – Donovan Muirbrook, Turlock LB – Damarion McDonald, Chavez LB – Mathieu Evans, Manteca LB – Royale Tago, Patterson LB – Desmond Sanders, Edison LB – Case Borges, Tracy LB – Gavin Wyatt, Oakdale DB – Jaden Harris, Manteca DB – Beau Kesterson, Oakdale DB – Mason Eagal, St. Mary’s DB – Chase Perino, Central Catholic DB – Amos Cady, Ripon Christian

I am extremely appreciative of my time spent in Hawai’i. Thank you to Coach Chang, Coach Arceneaux, Coach Kapanui, and Coach Socha for giving me an opportunity to be a Rainbow Warrior and for developing me as a player and as a man. Thank you to my teammates and all of Hawai’i for welcoming me and making me feel at home for the past year. It has been an unforgettable experience and I have met some lifelong friends and mentors. After a lot of prayer, thought, and discussion with family, I have decided to enter the transfer portal with 2 years of eligibility remaining. I am excited to see what God has in store for my next chapter! Representative Contact: Christopher Gil (323-893-0117)

The word is getting around, so I have to say something. Rest in peace to @blackhatfootbal. A longtime friend, onetime fantasy football team co-owner and former Modesto Bee colleague, he loved high school football, notably in the 209. I'm crushed tonight. You'll be missed, Rich.

I’ve been watching games since 6am.. Luke Weaver can start for many FBS teams. Lot of arm talent.. athletic. Makes quick decisions with the ball.. learns from his mistakes. Excellent game. #HawaiiFB

Lot of proud folks in Manteca tonight. Luke Weaver of East Union had game-winning TD pass for Hawaii in Hawaii Bowl win vs Cal, a team in which WR Jacob DeJesus (Manteca High) had another big game.

Hawai'i is fearless! Backup quarterback Luke Weaver comes in with no timeouts left to fire the likely game-winning TD pass. What a finish.
