@TheKentAcorn Hi there, I'm curious, where did you hear about Elizabeth I having lunch under the canopy? All the sources I have for the tree's naming are about her shooting a deer underneath it (the tree is part of a research project of mine so I'm interested where this other story came from).

Very happy with this haul from today’s secondhand trawl. Folk Reviews from 1972-75. Going to spend my Sunday afternoon immersed in my favourite musical period. The Watersons are recording Bright Phoebus; Shirley Collins has just retired; June Tabor is still working in a library!

@simon_schama Just Stop Oil have made several public statements that their focus on art is targeted to get attention and to generate a conversation around why paintings, in this instance, are more valued than human life. It's actually their awareness of art's value that forms their intention.

why do environmental activists (and I'm a bit of a one myself albeit in print) hate art so very much, think it's the enemy? At least Mary Richardson in 1914 had a cause connected to the depiction of the female nude when she slashed the Rokeby Venus.

At just before 11am this morning (6 November 2023) two people entered Room 30 of the National Gallery. The pair appeared to strike The Toilet of Venus (‘The Rokeby Venus’) by Velázquez with what appeared to be emergency rescue hammers. The room was cleared of visitors and police were called. Officers are now on the scene. Two people have been arrested. The painting is now being removed from display so it can be examined by Conservators.

As someone with Israeli friends, both Jewish and Arab, this sums up many if not all of my thoughts and feelings over the last few weeks. I'm glad to hear this articulated among the vocal, written & literal rubble that often makes up "the fog of war".
