Nobody from his era was half as dynamic as Sam Kieth. A true genius with the pen, a paneling and posing structure unlike anyone else in American comics. Rest in Peace. Dementia is a horrific disease and it’s better that he’s free of it now.

I love how Sam Kieth was able to mix texture with hyper detail with cartooning to create one of the most iconic & instantly recognizable styles in comics.

REST IN PEACE, Sam Kieth. You were a titan of talent!

More than 20 years ago I worked on a project directly tied to this issue — I even shared an office with one of the experts featured in the film. Back then, reactions ranged from curiosity to ridicule. Two decades later, we're getting closer to vindication. Everyone should watch:

"The Smoker"--an 8-inch tall, 14-inch long effigy pipe from Spiro Mounds in Oklahoma. It depicts a man smoking a frog effigy pipe. It is made from Missouri red flint-clay and came to Spiro from Cahokia around AD 1100-1250.
