The most common question I get from guys regarding female expats in Southeast Asia is: why would they move there if they know the dating market is so terrible? Ironically, most of these women are actually losers back home. Most of them have useless arts and gender studies degrees, so they are priced out of the West. With no other options, they end up teaching English in Asia. In my experience, pretty much all of these women are unattractive. They aren't able to land a rich man to leech off, so that's why they have to resort to teaching English in Asia.
Anti-Feminism Australia@AntiFeminismAU

So I infiltrated a female expat group in Vietnam. Every second post is western women complaining about how hard dating is for them there. They all say how dating is impossible and how they can’t compete with local Vietnamese women because they are more beautiful and submissive. Most of them become so lonely that they end up leaving Vietnam because they can’t find any chads to date. They also talk about how dating there crushed their confidence and made them feel unattractive. Now they know what dating is like for 95% of guys in the west and it seems they don’t like it.

@jacobincambodia What a cretin. There's a particular brand of "victimhood" here where losing face (SIL turning down loan request, probably because he's an alcoholic, gambling, philandering, unemployable layabout) flips a switch that enables absolutely inhuman behaviour.

Update on the Kandal kidnapping. The suspect, Kim Vanna, is the 5-year-old's great-uncle by marriage. He told police he acted alone and planned it that morning. His stated motive: the girl's mother had looked down on his family, and he'd been unable to borrow money from her. Police seized a blue Nokia burner used to send the ransom message and his personal phone. Investigators were asking about his wife's knowledge of the plan.

A man in Kandal province took a 5-year-old on Sunday, demanded $10,000 via Wing within an hour, and told the parents to expect her body if they were late or called police. They called police. The suspect was arrested. The child was already dead.

Video footage reportedly shows the Chinese national, Sun Mingchen, firing a machine gun alongside an Asian man in military clothing. Thai police say the clip was on his phone and was filmed at Cambodia’s Special Forces Command 911, the Bodyguard Headquarters (BHQ).
Jacob in Cambodia 🇺🇸 🇰🇭@jacobincambodia

Cambodia's Bodyguard Unit Just Surfaced In A Pattaya Weapons Case Bangkok Post reports digital forensic analysis of Sun Mingchen's phone identified the location of his training clips as Cambodia's Special Forces Command 911, the elite Bodyguard Headquarters known as BHQ. The clips reportedly show him handling firearms and throwing grenades alongside Cambodian soldiers. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul publicly confirmed the BHQ link Saturday and said the case must be dealt with swiftly. Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, speaking from Tokyo, called it worrying, addressed espionage speculation directly, and said the Foreign Ministry is now proposing to cut Chinese tourists' visa-free stays from 60 days to 30. Sun, 31, is a Chinese national. Police caught him after his car flipped in Bang Lamung Friday evening. A search of his rented house in Huai Yai turned up 4.8 kilograms of C4, two M16 rifles, four Russian POMZ-2 anti-personnel mines, grenades from Korea and Burma, three bulletproof vests, one rigged with C4 and a detonation system, and 763 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition stamped LOT RTA from the Royal Thai Army Ammunition Plant. He told police he ran a liquor shop in Cambodia before moving to Thailand "amid border issues." He holds Chinese and Cambodian passports and a Thai pink ID card. He has been moving in and out of Thailand since 2020. BHQ traces to Brigade 70, Hun Sen's elite guard, headquartered in Takhmao alongside his residence. The unit deployed to Chong Bok in June 2025 and led the Cambodian assault at Ta Kwai Temple before the July ceasefire. Cambodian outlets are silent. Chinese state media is silent. The training clips have not been released.

Cambodia's Ministry of Information formally objected today to the WSJ using "Scambodia," calling the term biased and harmful to the country's image. Fair objection. But the label stuck for a reason. Chen Zhi, a cabinet-rank adviser, turned out to run the largest cyber-fraud empire on the planet, and the rest of the sanctioned names are still at home. No doubt, this is the most significant crackdown yet, and the numbers are big. Ministry figures cite 250+ cases cracked and 91 casinos raided since July 2025, plus over 13,000 foreign nationals deported since January 2025. Close out the sanctioned names too and keep this going past April. Then the nickname fades on its own.
Jacob in Cambodia 🇺🇸 🇰🇭@jacobincambodia

Chen Zhi Got Extradited. The Rest Are Still Free. New WSJ piece on how Cambodia became "Scambodia," and one detail stands out. Of the roughly half-dozen alleged kingpins the US has sanctioned, only Chen Zhi has been publicly charged or arrested. Xu Aimin, sanctioned in September over the gold skyscraper rising in Phnom Penh, quietly resigned as chairman in November. His company K.B.X. Investment changed its name to Amara Koborak. The building is still going up. Kok An, the senator who owns the Crown Casino in Chrey Thom, is wanted in Thailand but undisturbed at home. Ly Yong Phat, sanctioned in 2024 for alleged abuses of forced laborers, is in the same position. Senior minister Chhay Sinarith told the Journal authorities are "monitoring activities" and waiting for other countries to show evidence. Hun Manet said in February he didn't know about the allegations against Chen until the US sanctions and indictment dropped, calling him "just a businessman, contributing to the economy." wsj.com/world/asia/cam…

@jacobincambodia Could be good. Could also drive out long term residents that make it interesting if it becomes a Bassac lane clone, the rent skyrockets and bars and drug dealers move in. At least it appears to be local initiative, not Norbert-Munns style interlopers.

Don't "Revitalize" What Already Works The narrow alleys around Orussey Market, locally called "Dueng Hem," are some of the most alive spaces in Phnom Penh. People run businesses out of shophouses, neighbors cook and repair and trade a few feet apart, kids play in the alleys. Each alley is basically a village inside the city. A new project wants to revitalize them with murals, greenery, better drainage and lighting. The architects are saying the right things about community ownership and bottom-up design. Maybe they mean it. But the White Building was cleared in 2017 for what was pitched as a housing redevelopment. Nine years on, it's the site of an unfinished casino expansion. Cambodia's track record on "revitalization" is usually demolition dressed up in nicer vocabulary. These alleys work because nobody planned them. They grew around the people who live there. Improve the drainage, add some lighting, fine. But the moment this becomes a branded walking street or a heritage tourism zone managed by people who don't live there, it's already gone. kiripost.com/stories/phnom-…

@jacobincambodia Water fights already happening for the last two days at the TTP and riverside in Phnom Penh. TTP seems to be the preferred location for youngsters wanting to get their baek sloy on. Gov 'bans' water fights every year, and every year there's water fights.

Thailand is going full Songkran. Cambodia just banned most of it. This year, from the top of government, they've said no water fights, no "shooting water" at each other. Water play is limited to localized splashing and throwing powder, framed as "back to our roots." Previous years were quite active. Kampot, where I live, had fire trucks at the durian roundabout, water guns in the street, powder fights everywhere. No real reasoning has been given, so everyone's speculating. Maybe it's because Cambodian workers returning from Thailand during Khmer New Year have been bringing Thai traditions back with them and the government doesn't want to be seen copying Thailand. Maybe it's about not celebrating too heavily given the displaced families from the border conflict. But if it's about the displaced families, why not set something up so they could enjoy the holiday too? And if there's a real reason behind the ban, why not just say it? Instead we get a blanket restriction on the things most people actually enjoy, with no explanation attached.

Cambodia's King Norodom Sihamoni has disclosed that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. In a Royal Message dated today from Beijing, he said doctors at a Beijing hospital require him to remain for one to two more months of treatment. He will not return to Cambodia for the time being. The message was issued ahead of Khmer New Year.

Brawl at Phnom Penh's old airport detention center Video circulating on Chinese-language Telegram shows a fight between Indonesian and Chinese detainees at the old Phnom Penh international airport, now used as a holding facility for people swept up in Cambodia's scam compound raids. Hundreds of detainees from different countries are packed into the facility waiting for deportation. Firsthand accounts from inside describe no AC, filthy conditions, a canteen charging $7.50 for a pack of cigarettes and $5 for cup noodles, with 20-30% surcharges on USDT and RMB payments. One account says the trigger was Indonesian detainees price-gouging Chinese detainees on top of already inflated costs, which tracks with other descriptions of tensions inside. Cram a few hundred people from different countries into a hot warehouse with no ventilation, mix scammers with trafficking victims, leave them sitting for weeks waiting on embassy paperwork and deportation flights, and this is what you get.

Last week when I was in Sihanoukville, I walked by the Daxigang Hotel & Casino and thought it didn’t have the usual obvious signs of a typical scam operation. It looked like it was under renovation, no serious security personnel around. Turns out, according to a post on Chinese social media, they might have been expecting an inspection and clearing out. With the country-wide crackdown, some provinces stricter than others, smaller operators might be waiting it out to see if they can fly under the radar. Makes you wonder how they know in advance a “surprise” inspection is coming. Just my personal observation, nothing concrete.

【Another major brand exits Cambodia】 Major Cineplex is done. After over 12 years in Cambodia, the Thai cinema chain posted its farewell and is closing up. Another international brand gone. Another step backwards for Cambodia, not forwards. No official explanation beyond the goodbye letter thanking customers for over 12 years of loyalty. But the timing speaks for itself. The Buy Khmer push is fine. Support local businesses, absolutely. But ultranationalism that drives out foreign brands doesn't hurt Thailand. Cambodia's market isn't big enough to make a dent in their economy. It only hurts Cambodia. Thai products and brands contribute to this economy. Let the border dispute be the border dispute. Don't let it drag the rest of the country backwards with it.
