The possible misuse of nearly €10 billion of Next Generation EU funds in Spain would represent one of the biggest scandals in recent European history. European recovery funds must never be used to cover ordinary state expenditure such as pensions. If these allegations are confirmed, we are facing a serious abuse of European taxpayers’ money. We will raise this issue in the Committee on Budgetary Control and demand full transparency and accountability. Yet today, it is still often easier to fly between two European cities than to book a cross-border rail journey with several legs. Single ticketing for travellers is what free roaming is for mobile phone users: a practical European solution that makes cross-border mobility simple and seamless.
