.. able to attract similar scale of populace while also retaining the potential to enrich our lives. Nothing comes remotely close! (Sports fans might remind us of cricket. Formidable thing no doubt but I doubt its potential.)

At this thing called Mango Utsav. Kids are liking it, so I'm good. And I also ate my possible full dose already, so can't complain for sure. But the broken record that I am, can't help but wonder at the absolutely unique and sublime position cinema has in our culture, in being..

Ok, so they don't follow through in the 2nd half. But it's alright, I'd say. I for one was seriously taken by the very mundane bourgeois scenarios the film develops in the 1st half for the family with a history of grave sensational crime continuing to haunt them.

And things get increasingly complex. It's like, Jeethu is just taking his time to get to these questions, in the process making more films, telling *more stories*, while critics were/are impatient expecting all of it to emerge within one film.

The DRISHYAM series is a remarkable achievement in Indian mainstream cinema, even though limited both in its worldview and cinematic form. I was taken by the sequel, much to my surprise, in how it carried forward several things from the first.

And I'd take Karthik Subbaraj's joyful authorial mainstream over Thiagarajan Kumararaja's aloof extremely controlled classicism any day of the week. Even in terms of being eclectic, I reckon Karthik Subbaraj's association will be a lot more fruitful. cc: @exit30b

Ha ha ha, just realising and laughing at Karthik Subbaraj's casual dropping of the number 1540!

@exit30b And i don't know about others. At least, i saw/see so many references to it in my "for you" tab (naturally more so after i shared a link). It feels like something has struck a chord here. I claim it's not the content but the form.

@exit30b Yeah, i don't want to point to it as a deal-breaker. People will say it's the norm or what have you. In fact, AI generated text speaks exactly the sort of comforting language as well, not on its own but because it has currency...

Way too sentimental, honestly. On board with this diagnosis about adult life otherwise. (On the sentimentality itself, I'd also argue we should first resist this very form of pop lang./vocab. to truly reject this modern dogma of running life as projects.) timesofindia.indiatimes.com/blogs/civil-ir…

I'd also go out on a limb and claim it's this form that makes this piece so captivating for today's corporate professionals. It's the tone of a lament that can not only coexist but also sustain the mundane busy-ness of modern life.

Karuppu is a mess. Zero respect for its audience, the dubbing and editing are a joke. RJ Balaji cannot think beyond skits level comedy, the whole thing is devoid of sincerity and maturity. Review, livemint.com/mint-lounge/ar…

Saw many takes that said it gets worse in 2nd half. And witnessing the same right now. This is a complete waste of any generic mass hero image, let alone Suriya in particular.

At this stage, Tamil cinema big heroes should just collaborate with directors from Telugu cinema. Dhanush was ahead of time with VAATHI (even KUBERAA was interesting in other ways...). I now think even Vijay was on to something with VAARISU!

Does KARUPPU really have hype? Or have people booked tickets because nothing much has happened on the movies front recently? (Which I empathise with.)
