After reports of inadequate food, hygiene and medical care, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema intervened on May 29, ordering them flown home.

They were seeking specialist medical care for the boy’s disability at Akron Children’s Hospital in Ohio. During CBP questioning, Gyasi admitted fearing return to Ghana due to stigma around her son’s condition, leading officers to classify her as seeking asylum and cancel the visas. The family has been held in a windowless room with inadequate food, hygiene and medical care.
