Tonight I turn west again, the A350 lifting away from Hong Kong and back toward London Heathrow Airport. But before leaving, I stood for a while at the harbour and watched something altogether different. From the Wan Chai Heliport, a helicopter of the Government Flying Service came in during daylight, steady, deliberate, lifting a casualty toward waiting ambulances. Hours later, as the skyline shifted from gold to neon, another mission launched into the darkness. Daylight landing. Night departure. Same purpose. Hong Kong’s Government Flying Service traces its roots back to the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force of the 1940s. Since 1993 it has operated as a fully fledged government aviation unit, flying search and rescue, medical evacuation, firefighting and law enforcement support across some of the most densely populated urban airspace and rugged coastal terrain anywhere in the world. Between skyscrapers and mountains, over busy shipping lanes and crowded streets, they do the quiet work. No fanfare. No filter. Just skill, discipline, and urgency when it matters most. Watching that before a long-haul departure puts things in perspective. Aviation isn’t just about crossing oceans, it’s about service. Whether it’s 14 hours to Europe or 10 minutes to hospital, the principle is the same: show up, do it well, get someone safely where they need to be. Hong Kong is growing on me… the harbour light, the vertical ambition, the improbable blend of granite hills and glass towers. I leave tonight with a twinge of reluctance: home to launch JUMBO later this week, then a short sojourn to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, before returning here again several times in March.
