this is actually insane > be tech guy in australia > adopt cancer riddled rescue dog, months to live > not_going_to_give_you_up.mp4 > pay $3,000 to sequence her tumor DNA > feed it to ChatGPT and AlphaFold > zero background in biology > identify mutated proteins, match them to drug targets > design a custom mRNA cancer vaccine from scratch > genomics professor is “gobsmacked” that some puppy lover did this on his own > need ethics approval to administer it > red tape takes longer than designing the vaccine > 3 months, finally approved > drive 10 hours to get rosie her first injection > tumor halves > coat gets glossy again > dog is alive and happy > professor: “if we can do this for a dog, why aren’t we rolling this out to humans?” one man with a chatbot, and $3,000 just outperformed the entire pharmaceutical discovery pipeline. we are going to cure so many diseases. I dont think people realize how good things are going to get

@ChezSpecter For me it’s ‘I should learn more’ and reading is a vehicle to achieve that.

This week on The Shoulds, we're discussing the theme of: 'I should read more' 📚 So let's unpack that. If this is a 'should' that resonates for you, where do you think it's coming from?

@JoeNewberry My dad had dementia and passed last summer. I was able to fly back and make it to the hospital just in time to say goodbye. He had been unresponsive for several hours, but just seconds before he went, he opened his eyes, looked at me, and squeezed my hand. Then he was gone.

In my dad's last days, I asked the hospice nurse, an older woman from Alabama, "What is keeping him here? Why won't he let go?" She said, "Why honey, he's got the dementia. He can't find the door. When he finds the door, he'll be gone." 1/2

@ChezSpecter Heading there for 10 days myself next week. Would love your yoga recommendations as Google left me none the wiser. I’ll survive without brunch and slimline tonic though 😉

I'm staying in Lisbon for a few weeks, and enjoying the lack of decision overwhelm here. Brunch? There are three places. Yoga? Two English-speaking classes. Slimline tonic? Go back to London.

Can anyone recommend a good commuter running backpack which also has a laptop sleeve - if such a thing exists?

@ChezSpecter ❤️ this. When I lived in Copenhagen a long time ago I think they had something similar on some of the busses. A couple of seats where it said “If you sit in either of these two seats, it means you’re willing to have a conversation with a stranger.”

I’m in Tel Aviv and I’ve fallen in love with these public benches-for-one facing each other, creating incidental social interaction through a bit of considerate urban design

In 2009, a Stanford business professor: - Split her class into 14 teams - Gave each team $5 and 2 hours - Told them to get as much ROI as possible - Said they’d give a presentation after finishing Here’s how it went down + the foundational lesson you can learn from it: 🧵

Self-employment is a funny thing. Without end-of-year bonuses or promotions, you have to define your own version of success. Today, success is receiving this review of my book, Alonement
