Activity in the M2 predicts upcoming choices. But what does the activity represent? A gaze-centered plan? A world-centered goal? A specific movement? We asked rats to plan responses to different targets from different start position to find out! 1/5 jneurosci.org/content/44/37/…

“You can’t just be confident, you have to be confident about something.” Research led by @erlichlab and Xiaoyue Zhu set out to disentangle the different kinds of confidence by designing a perceptual gambling task for rodents. ⬇️ sainsburywellcome.org/web/blog/decod…

Finally! This is the version of record; it's also the version to read, thanks to the review process at eLife. The finding was out of reach before macaque Neuropixels. @eLife: Direct observation of the neural computations underlying a single decision doi.org/10.7554/eLife.…

The self and world centred information was multiplexed at the single neuron level as a position gain field modulating directional tuning! Read the paper to find of more details! 5/5

We could decode the 2D position and direction but planning was done preferentially in self-centred direction coordinates 4/5

@SussilloDavid @JoeVero_ @Neuro_Skeptic > I can't think of anything that would advance neuroscience faster Interesting! Not even a set of slightly less accurate/exhaustive but more interpretable latent factor models? You don't see a tradeoff b/w complexity and interpretability in terms of how fast the field advances?

Neuroscientists: suppose we magically gained access to a 100% accurate digital model of the human brain, allowing us to measure and manipulate whatever we want. Would we be able to understand how that model worked?

Have you ever done a dense grid search over neural network hyperparameters? Like a *really dense* grid search? It looks like this (!!). Blueish colors correspond to hyperparameters for which training converges, redish colors to hyperparameters for which training diverges.

🚨First preprint from the lab!! All credit goes to @cesca_gst & @HernyMV who co-led this project. tinyurl.com/47w98a6b We show that movement-related striatal dopamine signals encode an action prediction error, a value free teaching signal. 🧵👇 1/25
