Our ESA/Hubble Picture of the Month features a starry spiral in a familiar neighbourhood 🏘️👋 NGC 3137 is located 53 million light-years away in the constellation Antlia (The Air Pump). It travels through space with a group of galaxies thought to be similar to the Local Group, with two large spiral galaxies and many smaller dwarf galaxies. 1/3

Behind the jaw dropping images lie even more stunning science results. In its 36th year of operations alone, Hubble observed ☄️ a comet breaking apart 🟣 a new type of object full of gas & dark matter 👾 and other cosmic anomalies 📹👇 🔭 🧪

But this telescope does not surprise us just on its anniversary. Discover some of the best views it has shared with us during its 36th year of operations, from a cosmic disco ball to a galaxy cluster that warps spacetime. 📹👇 🔭 🧪

Happy Earth Day! 🌎 🌍 🌏 To mark this special day, we’re tuning in to @sen, the world’s first continuous 4K video livestream from space. Sen’s cameras are hosted on our Columbus module of the International @Space_Station, with data delivered via the @AirbusSpace platform. Streaming in real time, it shows breathtaking views of our planet as the International Space Station passes over cities, oceans and deserts. Watch Earth from above, just like our astronaut @SophieAdenot does on the #εpsilon mission. 📹 Sen

Gravitational lensing occurs when the enormous gravity of a massive object such as a galaxy distorts the shape of spacetime, bending the light rays coming from a distant galaxy behind. By warping spacetime, the foreground galaxy acts like a magnifying glass.

The data you'll be inspecting is not yet public so you'll be getting an exclusive glimpse, while also helping the scientists. About 300 000 candidate lenses were pre-selected by AI algorithms from 72 million galaxies observed. We expect to confirm about 10 000 new lenses.

Three years since Juice launched on its journey to Jupiter. Arriving in 2031, it will explore the giant planet and its icy ocean moons, seeking to study them as both planetary objects and possible habitats. Next up, teams are preparing for the mission's upcoming Earth gravity assist manoeuvre later this year in September. More info 👇esa.int/Science_Explor…

We’re pretty sure this dark ash is made and released by volcanoes. Over time, either the wind blows the dark ash around to cover Mars’s light coloured surface, or the wind blows away the light dust to reveal the dark ash below. 3/4
