In NCAA basketball, there is no official foul called “over the back” in the rulebook. The term is commonly used informally by fans, players, and commentators to describe what they believe is illegal contact during a rebound when one player reaches over another. However, the NCAA rulebook does not list “over the back” as a distinct foul.
What the rules do cover is illegal contact—such as pushing, holding, or displacing an opponent while attempting to gain a rebounding advantage. This falls under Rule 10, Section 1, Article 10 of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rulebook, which deals with personal fouls. The key concept is verticality: every player has the right to their space, and reaching over another player is only a foul if it involves illegal contact.
So in NCAA play:
•Simply jumping higher or reaching over another player is not a foul by itself.
•A foul is only called if a player makes illegal contact—like pushing down on a player’s back or displacing them from their position.
In short, there’s no such thing as an “over the back” foul in the NCAA rulebook—only illegal contact.
