@mrsbrownEDU @CHitch94 @librarycongress At UT, we've also been incredibly lucky to have professors like Dr. Hsu and others with immigration expertise, give PDs for our students and for local teachers. These PDs have been wonderful for our Urban Teachers program. #sschat

Q6: Set a goal: How can you and your students work to incorporate #AAPI perspectives and experiences within your social studies work next year? Think research, think community, think big! #sschat #ImmigrantHeritageMonth

@kellyreneeallen @EDSITEment That's great to hear! There are some solid articles on the racial triangulation of Asian Americans (i.e. model minority myth as a disciplining mechanism against other communities of color) by Claire Jean Kim, Stacey Lee & Kevin Kumashiro and others. #sschat

@essbyul @EDSITEment I take the same approach. I teach in a 100% African American/Black HS so this approach opens up some great dialogue between students and what they have been taught/told leading up to that point #sschat

@CHitch94 What's also great about community involvement is that there are usually amazing people and organizations already doing a lot of the work. Their voices are also so important in our classrooms! #sschat

It is important to know your community and think carefully about what and why we have students do. #sschat

@EDSITEment A4: SC is a very red state. This is a topic/idea/issue that requires some delicate negotiations. Closest most of my students got to civic action was their teachers going to state capital to demand full funding of schools. #sschat

@EDSITEment Q4: Our students attend rallies, marches... they also have know your rights flyers available for all students. They've also attended trainings for how to get involved when you see a confrontation between officials and civilians. #sschat

@kellyreneeallen @EDSITEment I've also found this to be extremely helpful... The videos of Japanese Americans who were incarcerated during WWII reading their letters to Miss Breed with Muslim American children has also been effective in some classes. #sschat

@EDSITEment A2: One question my students find particularly intriguing is examining how immigration policies towards Asian American immigrants is/was similar and/or different than current policies and attitudes with Latin America #sschat

@EDSITEment Q3: I try to facilitate experiences and questions where students have the time and guidance to reflect on how we are all within a constructed culture. I think it's important to make sure the US/our experiences are NOT a default yardstick by which to measure others. #sschat

@EDSITEment Q2: Examples of some compelling questions in my methods classes-Why is Angel Island rarely taught in schools? Who gets in, who doesn't, and who decides? What are the patterns in immigration laws and policies & what do they reveal about the US? #sschat

@EDSITEment @IEHS1965 Hello! I'm Esther Kim, a grad student in Social Studies education at UT Austin. I worked with Dr. Hsu on the immigrationhistory.org. Specifically the lesson plans. Unfortunately I'll be sticking around Austin working on my dissertation this summer... so no travel. #sschat
