The mission of Emily’s List is to support pro-choice women. It’s totally reasonable to not agree with that mission, but staffers who don’t like it should go work somewhere else.

Surely this will play well in a Michigan general election. Abdul El-Sayed is already losing in general election polls and he hasn’t faced any negative attacks yet.

Thank you @JoelMartinRubin for going public with this. I have said for years that Bernie is antisemitic. I held onto this story but can share it now. During the 2020 campaign, I faced grotesque antisemitism from others serving in Bernie's campaign and his surrogates. I was not the only one. I spoke with Joel directly when he worked for the campaign about this. Joel brought this concern to the campaign. Bernie knew about it. Bernie could have put a stop to the antisemitic behavior in his campaign back in 2020, as he did know about it. Bernie chose not to stop it or say a word about it. @BernieSanders may be Jewish, but he intentionally oversaw and still does an antisemitic effort that has morphed into the DSA. Carville has won tough elections. Hasan Piker endorsed candidates have not. I know who I'd be riding with if my goal was actually to defeat Republicans.

Finding real solutions to income inequality, climate change, and immigrant injustice has always been a Democratic priority. The DSA's answer is to tear the whole system down, which makes for good soundbites, not sound policies.

I am drawing a contrast to what I disagree with the far-left on. I love America, believe in a democratic capitalist system that rewards hard work with fair pay. I support strong and secure borders, with available legal avenues to immigrate here because we're a nation of immigrants and because immigration is the one of a few things preventing our nation from demographic collapse. I could, like you, go on and on about the different points of contrast, but we're whistling past the train station. In order to implement the things you and I believe in (most of which we're in agreement on), you have to win elections. And that's why we have political parties to begin with. As you said about a sovereign nation requiring borders..., so too does a political party need boundaries. Bill Clinton understood this when he distanced himself from Sistah Souljah. Barack Obama knew this when he distanced himself from Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Accepting the Hasan Piker's of the world will have disastrous consequences..., maybe not in a primary election, but most certainly in a general. It says something that Roy Cooper, Jon Ossoff, Josh Turek, Mary Peltola and Sherrod Brown are polling better in tougher swing states than Abdul El-Sayed is in Michigan, no?

Socialists are a minority among Democrats. If those of us in the majority can’t dominate and define the brand, that’s on us. Focus on making the case for what you believe and drawing contrasts when you disagree with the far left. Everything else is just whining.

@AJentleson I believe that promoting a tent that not only accepts, but features far left extremists, who hate America, don’t believe in a democratic, capitalist society that rewards hard work with fair pay, will end similarly to how it did in 2024. A return of the far-right to power.

@ethanmwolf Right, your response was to huff “if you believe in nothing you’ll fall for anything.” So I laid out some things that I believe, all of which are compatible with big tent absolutism. Now I’m asking you what you believe, because so far all you’ve said is “dive to the center.”

I believe that in America, if you work hard and play by the rules, you should be able to build a better life for yourself and your family. I believe the federal government should help make sure you have the tools you need to make that happen, from a good education to affordable health care to a safety net to catch you when you fall on hard times. I believe the federal government should root out corruption and cronyism, and ensure that markets are operating fairly.  I believe in progressive taxation and that right now, the rich and big corporations are getting away with murder. I believe in making the rich and big corporations pay their fair share, both to generate revenue that we can use to expand the safety net and as a matter of basic fairness.  I believe in democracy, and that whether somebody’s views are out of step is fundamentally a question for the voters of their state or district. I don’t believe in gatekeeping or purity tests.  I believe that unless we are attacked or there’s an imminent threat to our national security, most wars are not America’s interest. I believe that giving unconditional aid to Israel to perpetuate atrocities in Gaza is morally repugnant and against America’s national interests. I also believe that there are insane levels of waste fraud abuse in the defense budget. I believe that access to health care is a human right and I believe in making universal health care a reality here in America. I believe in free primary care for all, an aggressive public option and breaking up monopolies in areas where concentrated corporate power leads to worse outcomes for patients and families.  I also believe that people have understandable and organic concerns about losing their health insurance, ranging from loss aversion to good old-fashioned status quo bias, to anxiety about trusting the government as their primary provider of health insurance. I believe that if your goal is single-payer, the only path to getting there runs through showing—not telling—people that they can trust the government to provide their health care via a public option. I believe in an all-of-the-above approach to energy, and that fossil fuels are a necessary part of transitioning to a green energy future and to lowering energy prices right now.  I believe we need to tax the shit out of data centers and hyperscalers and make them pay for public goods like fixing the energy grid and holding ratepayers harmless. I think it’s becoming clear that we need sticks to compel compliance and that a moratorium should be on the table. I also believe this is an industry of the future and making sure the benefits of its growth are broadly shared is what industrial policy looks like in the 21st century. I believe in civil rights for all and constantly expanding the scope of who is included in those rights. I believe public opinion can be shaped, but that as you seek to lead it’s critical to remain “within arms reach” of public opinion, in the words of Congresswoman Sarah McBride. I believe a sovereign nation begins with a secure border. I believe immigrants make us a stronger country, but that everybody who wants to come here must come through the front door. I believe in putting criminals in jail and in neighborhoods where you don’t have to lock your doors at night. I believe that feeling safe is a precondition for everything else.  I believe that access to public education is a fundamental right, and that a meritocracy starts with giving everybody the chance to rise. I also believe that meritocracy means schools should have more flexibility to reward good teachers and fire bad ones, just like in any other profession. 1/

I think it’s worth reminding people that swing state elections are won in the middle, not the fringe. It’s why Abdul trails Mike Rogers in a general and why Stevens leads.

Abdul, we were both on the ballot in 2018. I was capable of winning my competitive primary and general election. You lost. You lost by over twenty points to Gretchen Whitmer and you will lose to Mike Rogers by talking like this. Everyone in America understands you want to blame all of your problems on Jewish Americans. But buddy, let me be very clear, I will lower the costs of groceries, ban stock trading for elected officials, stop Trump's abuses of power, and protect Michigan manufacturing.
