@ElietteAbk6 Un passage en France m’a permis d’acheter et de lire ce livre, dont l’ami @smetsjp m’avait parlé. Une histoire de génération, de tangentes et de vies parallèles.

I used to refrain from buying big-ticket books and wait for the priced-down paperback version. But books published in India are much cheaper. As their cover indicates, they are "For sale in the Indian subcontinent only." Economists call this price differentiation. #OneDayOneBook

At the close of #ReunionMonth : a tribute at Pondicherry University’s boat-shaped memorial to South Indian workers, followed by a lecture by Réunionese author-historian Gaëlle Bélem 📚. @etienneRP underlined a living bridge between India and Réunion Island.

<The Ratest Fruit> by Gaëlle Bélem tells the story of Edmond Albius, born into slavery, who at age 12 invented a technique for pollinating vanilla orchids. As part of its Mois de la Réunion, Alliance Française @DePondichery has an exhibition on Albius and vanilla. #OneDayOneBook

Invited in 2004 by @ifiofficiel to give lectures on his book about a Neapolitan castrato, Dominique Fernandez writes a travelogue in the footsteps of Pasolini’s L’Odore dell’India (1962). He didn’t go farther south than Goa & Bangalore, and didn’t visit Pondicherry #OneDayOneBook

A Nobel Prize laureate leads an itinerant life. Among the many cities visited in <The Jardin des Plantes>, Claude Simon makes stops in Madras and in Calcutta, where he has a discussion on the proper declamation of alexandrine verse. Too bad he didn’t come to Pondy. #OneDayOneBook

Sharad Chandra writes that the young Albert Camus, a student of Jean Grenier - himself a fine connoisseur of Indian civilisation and translator of Sanskrit - had read the Bhagavad-Gîtâ. Camus’ novels and essays echo a number of ideas and concepts from the philosophy of the Gîtâ.

This book follows young IPS officer Anoop Jaiswal, a Hindi-speaking northerner dropped into the wild port town of #Tuticorin. Armed with zero Tamil but endless empathy, he navigates a hotbed of smuggling, bootlegging, caste feuds, and aruval-wielding locals in the pre-mobile era.

Savez-vous que <La Tentation de l’Occident> d’André Malraux commence par un "Proverbe malabar" mis en exergue : « Celui qui regarde longtemps les singes devient semblable à son ombre »? Proverbe inventé par Malraux, assurément. #OneDayOneBook

We cannot rely on the assertions of the Anglo-American world, derived from a unique and irreproducible experience, to understand today's geopolitical turbulence. Pankaj Mishra's "Age of Anger" draws on other intellectual traditions to critique our present. #OneDayOneBook

We all know the famous quip in which a Frenchman objects to a technical fix to a problem: "it surely works in practice, but does it work in theory?" Globalisation worked in practice, but it didn’t work in theory. And now theory has come back with a vengeance.

France prides itself on its writers-diplomats, from St-John Perse to Romain Gary, but the Indian diplomatic service also upholds its own literary tradition: Nina Sibal, B.M.C. Nayar, Navtej Sarna, Tiru Murti, @VikasSwarup, Abhay K. @theabhayk all wrote fine books. #OneDayOneBook
