Album of the day. Those enamored with the late great Donald Byrd's killer streak of jazz-funk classics in the '70s should already know what this 1976 gem offered. For his final release on the Blue Note label, 1976's Caricatures, Byrd capped his winning collaboration with the great Larry and Fonce Mizell, melding their Motown-steeped soul sensibility with mellow-but-vibrant jazz-funk. Building off the style of previous outings,— Places & Spaces, Street Lady, and Black Byrd—there's plenty of bouncy, flowing grooves, spacey keyboards, and sweet funky trumpet licks from Byrd. Above all, he gets help from an impressive crew of ace players including Patrice Rushen on keyboards, Gary Bartz on alto sax, David T. Walker on guitar, and Alphonze Mouzon on drums. Even James Jamerson sits in on a session and lays down some tasty bottom on a track here. Fun fact: this cool black-and-white caricature of Donald Byrd on the cover was done by arguably the most famous caricaturist ever, Al Hirschfeld. Enough said.
