The judge interrupted Gorinov’s closing statement after he mentioned the 500,000 Ukrainians reportedly killed in the war, according to Shoigu. A 10-minute recess was announced, after which Gorinov read his closing statement to journalists and attendees. The support channel for Gorinov published his full closing statement: 💬 "Throughout my life, I have been an opponent of aggression, violence, and war, dedicating myself exclusively to peaceful endeavors: science, teaching, education, governance, public service as a deputy, human rights activist, election commission member, and election observer. I never thought I would live to see such a level of degradation in my country’s political system and foreign policy, where ordinary citizens—now numbering in the thousands—who stand for peace and against war, are accused of defaming the Armed Forces and justifying terrorism, and are put on trial. We are now in the third year of the war, the third year of unprecedented casualties and destruction on European soil since World War II, bringing suffering and hardship to millions of people. This cannot be ignored. Back in late April, our former Minister of Defense announced that Ukrainian losses in the armed conflict had reached 500,000 people. Think about that number! And what are Russia's losses, given that, according to official sources, it is supposedly advancing successfully along the entire front? We still don’t know. Who will be held accountable for this? What is it all for? Our authorities, along with those who support their militaristic aspirations, were so eager for this war—and now it has reached our land. I would like to ask them: Has our life improved? Is this your idea of prosperity and security for our country and its people? Or did you fail to anticipate this outcome in your calculations? Yet it is not those who initiated the war, who continue to kill, promote war, and engage in mercenary activities, who are being held accountable. Instead, it is us, ordinary citizens of Russia, who raise our voices against war and for peace. We are the ones paying the price, with our freedom and, in some cases, our lives. I belong to a fading generation whose parents participated in or survived World War II with all its hardships. This now-departed generation left us a legacy: to safeguard peace as the most precious thing on Earth for all its inhabitants. But we have disregarded their legacy and devalued our memory of those people and the sacrifices of that war. My guilt lies in the fact that, as a citizen of my country, I allowed this war to happen and could not stop it. I ask that this be noted in the verdict. But I would also like my guilt and responsibility to be shared by the organizers, participants, supporters of the war, and the persecutors of those who advocate for peace. I continue to live with the hope that this will happen someday. In the meantime, I ask the people of Ukraine and my fellow citizens affected by the war to forgive me. In the case for which I was accused and tried—simply for expressing the opinion that we must seek to end this war—I have fully conveyed my stance on this vile human endeavor. I can only say that violence and aggression breed only more violence, nothing else. This is the root cause of our suffering, our senseless losses, and the destruction of civilian and industrial infrastructure, as well as our homes. Let us put an end to this bloody slaughter, which benefits no one—not us, nor the people of Ukraine. Isn’t it time to leave our neighbors in peace and focus on our growing domestic problems, which are piling up like a snowball? We have long since proven to the world how brave, resilient, and peace-loving we are. Perhaps it’s time to stop? L.N. Tolstoy wrote in a letter to his son (1904): ‘For me, the madness and criminality of war are so evident that I can see nothing in it besides this madness and criminality.’ I, too, join and stand by these words of our great compatriot.
