If you're a foreigner visiting Poland and you rent a room in our country, you might wonder what this is. It's called a tile stove, or masonry heater. Polish tile stoves have been the original heating power banks for generations. All you have to do is burn wood for 1-2 hours, close the hatch, and the heavy ceramic structure traps the heat, warming the room for the next 12 to 24 hours. In the past, it was the coziest spot in winter. In old Polish folklore, lazy people were jokingly described as "sitting on the stove" usually sharing space with the family cat. Some tile stoves had a special built-in bench or platform right next to them called a "zapiecek" where elderly people would literally sleep on it to soothe back pain, rheumatism, and winter colds. Tile stoves are still quite popular in Poland.
