@SohomScalesX Thank you! It is sometimes the most difficult connection for people to make - especially for those who are not directly affected. If everyone had 5 acres they were personally responsible for - things would shift quickly.

Forests and Communities: Outcomes, Not Abstractions evergreenmagazine.com/forests-and-co… Forests are not abstractions. They are the backbone of rural economies, the source of local jobs, the setting for family traditions, and the environment communities live with every day. Decisions about forests have human consequences—on livelihoods, public safety, smoke exposure, mills, and the very meaning of home in wildfire country.

@BoomertarianN Yes. The local communities in the WUI are the first line stewards - their economy is tied to public lands through management and tourism, they are the ones that are most affected by wildfire on public lands - their voices need to be at the forefront.

@BoomertarianN Correct. And if all the lands are managed by one entity that clearly is not impartial - crucial checks and balances are eliminated. Public lands are owned by the public and need to be managed for future generations - they are not a bargaining chip for special interest groups.

Evergreen is independent, reader-supported forestry journalism. As we begin the new year, we’re outlining the work ahead — and the support required to do it well. We will continue asking for reader support until the work pays for itself, because clarity and independence are not free. We’re welcoming leadership-level contributions of $250, which include a one-year subscription (or cover the next subscription cycle for current subscribers). As a thank-you, one leadership supporter will be randomly selected to receive a framed limited-edition print, Warmth, by Chebon Dacon, from our personal collection. 🔗 Read the New Year message & support the work: evergreenmagazine.com/the-work-ahead/

Who Shapes the Forest? evergreenmagazine.com/who-shapes-the… Much of Evergreen’s work asks an essential question: Who shapes how forests are understood and managed—and whose knowledge becomes the authority when decisions are made? And why? This year, Evergreen published work that centers two voices too often treated as secondary rather than essential: women working at the intersection of stewardship and foresight, and tribal nations whose forest management is grounded in long-term responsibility to land and place.

It's Time to Let The Myth of The Wild Die evergreenmagazine.com/its-time-to-le… In the legendary May 17, 1903 discussion between conservationist John Muir and President Teddy Roosevelt, Muir sold the President on the uniquely American myth of the wilderness. It was an insult to Native American tribes that have been living in our “wilderness areas” for eons.

Stewardship is Active evergreenmagazine.com/stewardship-is… Healthy forests do not happen by accident. They are the result of informed decisions, ongoing observation, and a willingness to adjust when conditions change. Adaptive forest management is not a slogan—it is a practical framework grounded in science, monitoring, and measurable outcomes.
