@robinsonmeyer When I joined The Journal News, which covers Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam counties, just north of NYC, in 1999, the paper had 1,000 employees, including a film critic. Our business news desk had 13 people. I covered IBM. It was a great gig. We covered a lot of news.

Quite revealing that people think I’m talking about the Times, when my whole point is that these weren’t national papers. Miami used to have several independent daily papers. The Baltimore Sun had multiple foreign bureaus. The Morning Call in Allentown, PA, employed 1,000 people.

If you want to feel like you live in “the ruins of a once great civilization,” then read a newspaper from the middle of last century — our predecessors had more and better information about their neighbors, their governments, and their local democracies than we do about ours.

I take no leave of you, 2025. I send no compliments to your mother. You deserve no such attention. I am most seriously displeased.

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE was released 79 years ago today. One of the most beloved of all Christmas movies, and among the most popular films of its star James Stewart, the tale of how it was created is like throwing a lasso round the moon… 1/47

Many men struggle romantically because they have trouble seeing women as friends and people. Nietzsche said the key to a successful marriage is cultivating friendship with your wife, because friendship is the one thing that lasts. “Marriage is a talent for friendship.”

Insane haul today at the library book sale - seven books for seven dollars ... the librarian told us they had been donated and the donor worried that the books were too niche to sell ... I've been searching for some of these for AGES 🤓

it's an especially good weekend to log off and do soul-nourishing things: board games, gardening, writing, hiking in late summer splendor, picking basil, reciting poems, reading for education, reading for joy, reading for any reason whatsoever.

Etymology of the day: ‘dog day afternoons’ are so named not because dogs seek out the shade, but because, during the hottest days of summer in the northern hemisphere, the Dog Star Sirius rises with the sun.

@lmkwhenurhome I kept the log of my Facebook conversations with my mom that included random thoughts at all hours. It’s four years since she passed, and I’m sure some of my friends wonder why I text them mundanities. There’s no one who enjoys your mundanities as much as your mom.

If you're using AI to write essays, eulogies, a text to your wife, I do think less of you as a person. Ceding your mental and creative abilities to a machine is an embarrassing thing and people should be ashamed to admit doing it in public.

@AmericanAir He needs to get to Indianapolis tonight, but no one is working with him at the airline. They said here’s a hotel, and maybe we’ll get you there tomorrow afternoon. He has an event that starts at 6 AM tomorrow morning.

@AmericanAir I can’t help but think that the fact that he got a good rate because we bought ahead of time is playing a big role and the fact that he wasn’t able to get on his flight that was delayed till 530 and that you weren’t even willing to put him on the flight later in the night.
