🇳🇬 Nigeria just got its first credit rating upgrade in 14 years.
S&P Global one of the world's most respected rating agencies just upgraded Nigeria's credit rating from B- to B with a stable outlook.
14 years. That is how long it has been since Nigeria received good news like this from S&P.
What does a credit rating even mean?
Think of it like a financial report card for an entire country. When the grade goes up, it signals to the rest of the world that Nigeria is becoming a safer, more reliable place to invest money. Foreign investors pay close attention to these ratings before deciding where to put their capital.
Why did we get the upgrade?
Three things drove it:
✅ The liberalisation of the foreign exchange market making Nigeria's currency more transparent and trustworthy to global investors
✅ Stronger oil production and the Dangote Refinery increasing domestic refining capacity reducing our dependence on imported fuel
✅ Improved government revenues and a stronger balance of payments meaning Nigeria is managing its money better than before
What does this mean for your investments?
When Nigeria's credit rating improves, foreign capital flows in. That means more demand for Nigerian assets including the stocks on the NGX.
