In her 60s, one of Nargis’s core memories is sitting on the back of her father’s bicycle as he rode through west Delhi, collecting plastic, glass bottles, tins and cartons. She was 8 then. Now, she spends 10 hours of her day sorting over 50 kg of waste each day, from 100 houses.

A 20-year-old Adivasi woman from Jharkhand, who was trafficked at the age of 14 and recently rescued from a residential building in Greater Noida, told The Hindu that her employer “raped her for three days and then forced her to ingest a pill while his wife was away”. She said she was routinely subjected to harassment, slurs, and assault by the couple. ✍️@ButaniAshna thehindu.com/incoming/adiva…

But first, the Q paper theft that got us thinking. In Solapur, 50 SSC Geography papers were stolen from a strong room of an examination centre a day before the exam. While reporting this, @SohamShah07, our intrepid edu reporter in Pune, found something else. 2 days before the theft, someone had already tried to break into the same strongroom. No alarm was raised on that day. No one escalated it. And then, the papers were gone. (3/10) indianexpress.com/article/educat…

#GlobalRecyclingDay | Delhi’s informal recycling network, including waste collectors, waste pickers, aggregators, and kabadiwallas, remains largely invisible to the city that depends on their labour. With only 59% of waste segregated at source, thousands of these workers continue to shoulder the task of sorting mixed solid waste, without formal recognition or incentives. ✍️ @existsfortea 📸 @Sushil_Verma9 , @existsfortea thehindu.com/news/cities/De…

“Will It Work?” That’s @nytimes headline on Israel’s extrajudicial assassinations. Not the fact that they violate international law and set a dangerous precedent, but will it work. How is this journalism?

The Union government’s proposed legislation to withdraw transgender people’s right to “self-perceived gender identity” and redefine who a “transgender person” is, has led to student protests and public meetings within the transgender community across cities such as New Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad and Kolkata, calling for the government to withdraw the Bill and protect the right to self-perceived gender identity, report @al_lakshman and @ButaniAshna thehindu.com/news/national/…

The death of a 26-year-old man in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar, allegedly after a brawl between members of two families over a Holi water balloon, soon took a communal turn. Police and neighbours emphasised a five-decade-long familial association with repeated altercations over neighbourhood issues such as parking and garbage.  Shrimansi Kaushik and Suruchi Kumari report on the affected families and the residents of the jhuggi-jhopri colony, where the atmosphere remains tense thehindu.com/news/cities/De…

@CPDelhi, @DelhiPolice: It is disappointing that hate assemblies are being allowed in and around Uttam Nagar. We, Hindus, Muslims and all others, depend on you for our safety and security. We hope that everyone will be safe under your watch. We do hope that you would not fail us.

In between collection and disposal, the informal workers who carry out sorting of Delhi’s waste by hand form the lowest tier of the recycling chain, struggling with access to waste - caught in cycle of poverty, debt and invisibilization. thehindu.com/news/cities/De…

The SWM Rules, 2026, which will replace the 2016 framework from April, also reiterates the need to integrate waste pickers into formal segregation and recycling systems, which is yet to be done, despite being also acknowledged in the Second Labour Commission report and 2016 rules

British didn't build New Delhi out of sheer benevolence, just as the Modi government is not undertaking a wholesale redevelopment due to pressing need. Both the British and the Modi government were driven by the same impulse: to stamp their imprint on the city.

Over the last decade, the #RTI Act has become ineffectual. For the all practical purposes, we are not getting any information. In past 10 years, it has been in dead phase. When it was enacted, it was very assertive, says Shadan Farasat, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, in conversation with @Aaratrika_11 at The Hindu #JusticeUnplugged2026, in association with @ChennaiVit.
