The sexual tension between the University of Iowa and randomly ripping apart then rebuilding perfectly good roads

I’m asking because I don’t know. Maybe nobody does. But I think we can all agree that “shut everyone and everything down forever” is not sustainable

How does the local economy recover from that? How do locally-owned businesses survive? What is your solution for preventing the downtown from collapsing? Loans? Bailouts? Someone? Bueller?

Football season injects an estimated $100M into the Iowa City area economy every season, including direct and induced spending (per Visitor’s Bureau, 2016)...no football season and bars/restaurants closed, plus the very high likelihood of students getting sent home

What if I told you...there was year when a global pandemic and hysteria/fearmongering resulted in the cancelation of every major sport, the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars, and schools being forced to cut programs. Watch “Hindsight is 2020”, a 30 for 30 production.

Gotta love the old “because I said so” rationale. B1G has no excuse or justification for their decision and is hiding from the players, parents, and fans who make them their millions every year.

I think it is soooo adorable how the university will shut down student orgs, bars, and sports but not classes. It’s almost like...they’re only having in-person classes to justify the fact that they continue to charge full tuition for a crippled and subpar learning experience ☕️🐸

The unfortunate truth is closing bars to stop college kids from having social gatherings will be as effective as the number 21 is at stopping college kids from drinking

Being in Iowa City knowing that the next 12 Saturdays won’t be spent in a blacked out, glorious blur is so depressing

By all means, at-risk populations should be supported/encouraged to stay home. But what about everyone else? People always faced the risk of getting sick every time they left their house before this. Those who acknowledge/accept the risk shouldn’t be required to stay home.

I am genuinely waiting for someone of the “lock everything down for the foreseeable future” camp to explain what their plan is. Like I’m ready to listen. I just haven’t yet seen a semblance of an actionable plan for when/how they want to reopen.

My heart especially goes out to the B1G cross country runners. Spring season canceled, now cross season canceled. It is unbelievably hard to do the physically and mentally demanding workouts the sport requires day in/day out, let alone with no goals or competitions in sight.

The fact this happened at all confuses me. Surely they knew when they released the schedule they would likely not be playing. Nothing that drastic could have changed in a matter of days. Cruel to give fans and players false hope and stall the announcement.

IMO the saddest part about the 4 Iowa programs being cut is that those kids worked their ass off to get there too. Many not on scholarship, simply there bc they love the game. Imagine your lifelong dream being snatched away bc the B1G commissioner refuses to look at facts.

In all honesty, coronavirus is the least of your infectious disease worries at this place

@hawkeyenation Nobody with a competitive bone in their body would be content to sit on the sidelines as less athletic and less talented players are given more opportunities than you. Good for Oliver.

@HawkeyeReport As a former collegiate swimmer, I think this sucks. Ironically, the swimmers and tennis players are ACTUAL STUDENT-ATHLETES. They aren't semi-pro football or basketball players, looking to go pro. They study, they graduate. It's actual intercollegiate athletics.

We can’t have a football season and are forced to cut 4 sports programs/crush the dreams of hundreds of young athletes. But thank god summit is open and the dorms are swarming with kids again! Someone make it make sense. What a time to be alive.
