In the 2nd half of Romans Chapter 14 Paul continues his look at how to deal with differences of opinion on handling real-life issues among Christians. He has stated that even as believers being led by the Holy Spirit we won’t agree on everything.
In vs 14 he gives an example about eating. He believes that all foods are acceptable to eat and he has gotten that affirmation directly from Jesus. But he understands that not all Christians see it that way. So what should he do?
Number 1 he says he needs to allow that person to live by their convictions. Then number 2, if it’s not something essential, he can keep the peace and not stress that person out by giving up his right to eat meat. He says creating an atmosphere of peace and joy amongst believers is more important than exercising his “rights”. Vs 19 says harmony and unity should be our aim when we’re talking about non-essential doctrine.
He also speaks to the person who might have the minority opinion. He says in vs 23 if you believe strongly that God has shown you that YOU shouldn’t do something then don’t do it—even if other people are. Follow your conscience and convictions and trust that God is leading you.
We have to understand Paul is talking to believers who are being led by the Holy Spirit. He’s not talking about embracing worldly ideas or clearly going against the word of God. But he’s telling us how to handle issues where we, as Christians, can disagree.
